There are many problems with this site that have forcefully been ignored by abusive ops. Now the ops have vanished save for a few who aren't abusive, and suddenly people are giving their real opinions. For the most part, I point out flaws, but also suggest ways to improve.

You call it verbal battery. I call it feedback. Feel free to complain about the explaination if it is not valid enough or doesn't coincide with what you believe, but it wont really matter.

I'm also extremely curious as to why people do this kind of thing. I still don't know 100% why they do it, but I do have my own theory.

Basically, from what I see it's simple. There's obviously not much logic in their posts. I honestly think they have a problem with someone and they want to make it known. They're like little kids and they don't know when to stop. They are the kind of people who will go way out of their way just to make a shot at someone.

there are also a handful of people who have mistakenly decided that the operators (in the minority, if you recall) equate to everyone on these boards. those who are "suddenly giving their real opinions" appear to be the same bitter boys with something to prove that get shut down every time the rules have tightened up around these parts.

pointing out flaws in the system and doing whatever other self-important nonsense you've claimed to be doing involves patronizing people who aren't doing much but trying to carry on conversation with each other? interesting.

No offense, Matt, but this thread isn't gonna serve a purpose. you put the word discussion into the title, and these people obviously have no desire to "discuss" anything. They are here for one purpose, and that is to agitate the rest of the community. Like you say, they will eventually get bored of it, and as long as the rest of us don't let their comments affect us, they will leave. Honestly though, they could at least drop the anonymity, and come out with why they want to agitate the community, but, immature children that they are, they probably won't.

Personally, I don't see why everyone can just accept the fact that people can and will have differing opinions, and then live with it. If you don't agree with the way things are run here (or, similarly, elsewhere), don't attend or participate. Being obnoxious about it isn't going to do anything accept cause unnecessary hate and discontent.

Its been said in so many ways, so many times - but I've never ever said it before: I feel a genuine sadness for whoever would come to these normally peaceful messageboards and take time out of their lives to agitate others. I don't feel sorry - I mean it, I genuinely feel it in the pit of my stomach- honestly- how sad of an existience would that be?

Anonymous posters, I'm not trying to make fun of you or insult you- but I know you have better things you could be doing. I mean, you could insult everyone on these boards and drive everyone away (is that your goal) - but what purpouse would that serve? How does that help you? In the long run, doing what you do is only a minor annoyance in the lives of people that post here. These people go to work, live their daily lives, and to their thing- and sometimes log on here to chat with friends.

If you were to sit in front of your computer, with the sole intent of agitating others, with no other reason or purpouse given.....I mean...I don't even know what to say to that. Thats fine. Continue to do so. It truly and honestly dosen't bother me- I just cannot understand for the life of me why you'd rather do that than ANYTHING else.

I'm trying to put myself in your shoes. Say I diliked someone for something they said or did to me: I'd probably say nothing to them. But, if I did want to, I'd say something to the effect of "Hi, I'm Dale and I hate you. Here are the reasons why." And then I'd be done. I don't see the point or benefit of continuing to agitate this person, or the people around this person. What good does it do? What drives a person to WANT to agitate others? It's easy to have an opinion and defend it steadfast. It's hard to respect other people's opinions when they conflict with your own. Almost every war in this world is caused by a rebellion against what is perceived to be an oppressing opinion. Mankind as a whole still has not learned to simply respect others, agree to disagree, and live with that or resolve their differing opinions through civilized compromise. They'd rather pick up a weapon (firearm or angry speech) because it's just easier.

Me personally, I really respect people who can voice a strong opinion without direct or implied condescension because they realize that it is entirely possible that the person they are arguing against is just as intelligent and wise as they are (or even more so). Once the latter point is conceded, two people with differing opinions can argue a point in a civilized, mature fashion without the need to resort to disrespecting the other person. It just isn't necessary.

I visit vgmix.com regularly. I also visit ocremix.org on occassion, and I enjoy the services both of them offer. They are doing a good thing for people by fueling aspiring musicians' desires to both produce music other people want to hear, as well as producing music that inspired themselves--all for free. I've been visiting remix.overclocked.org and vgmix.com since they were both established.

What PMM and OUS are about is NOT in competition with those sites. I've known Stephen K. and Mustin both since PMM and OUS were established. Their vision is not to make enormous profit off of other people's work and then retire early. They just aren't that stupid nor greedy. And trust me, neither of them, nor the artists working on these projects are making any money. On the contrary, they are losing it. So why do it, you ask?

1. To pay ("pay" in a literal sense here, also) tribute to composers that have captivated them for years.
2. "It's Okay to Listen to Game Music." -- To show the world beyond just the vg remix community that video game music is Okay!
3. To do so legally, without continuing to violate U.S. Copyright Law.

Is there really anything wrong with that?

Yes, Mustin can have an opinion about other people's music just like anyone else can have an opinion about Mustin's music. Have posts stating flaws with Mustin's music been deleted? Not unless they were deragatory flames. The latter is admittedly a judgement call by moderators and is a fine line. That's why recent changes were made here to allow more freedom in speech.

I guess what I'm asking is this. You are a guest here. Please be respectful of that. Be honest, but constructive. Be opinionated, but mature. There's no need to incite a war. Do all of that and soon veterans here will begin respecting your opinion and welcome you here as your home and so will I.

This particular message board is a little extreme in the aspect of correcting one another and trying to point out who's the upperclass poster. Now, members can take this in many ways. One is to just forget about the attitudes because it IS only a message board. Another way is to just not come back, this place isn't that great. It seems that some members after several encounters with "regulars" finally get accepted. What the hell is the need to feel accepted in a place where opinions are posted while staying as anonymous as one likes? It's not like this message board represents the real outside world. It's a community, yes, but it's a very elitist community. I can understand for those who know each other in person who visit this place, but there is no reason to be an elitist to a complete stranger.

Alright, I've read all of your opinions, now I'd like for you to take the time to read mine.

First off, Joe Cam, this topic is to try and make the boards better...yes, those 2 were being idiots, but just ignore them then if they don't wanna try and make this messageboard a better place.

I'm annoying, everyone knows it. But I've been told by a few people that even though I'm annoying, they like me...hell, even Joe Cam the other night said he thought highly of me, which surprised me.

A public forum is a place where everyone should feel welcome because no matter what forum it is, everyone there shares a common interest. There should be no singling out of anybody. Which makes me think...why did Shady leave? Because his posts would always get deleted.

I won't mention any names, but I've been talking with a few people off these message boards over IMs the last couple of weeks and some have told me these boards are taken a turn for the worst...and what really surprised me is someone else who's been here quite awhile talked about leaving.

We all have different opinions and not all of them go with general ideas, such as me and Baroquiel. Just because we have different tastes in games or game music or even the way we act and discuss stuff, there's no reason to act differently towards us.

It's one thing to rib other guys that you're friends with and punk them, but it's another thing to pick on them and bully them.

That's all I have to say...now if you don't mind, as Dale fucking North said, I have better things to do.

Not to defend assholes and trolls, but sometimes its a good thing to have people come in and stir the pot a little. Case in point is the PMM boards, its almost dead. While I must say that everyone there is very nice and polite, it is also very boring with nothing to spark conversation.

As was already said its a very elitist community and to that I can agree. As a person that knows nothing about music other than how to listen to it, its hard to find a way to interact. I think that some people that come here that seemingly spark trouble, think its good way to get directly involved with board members and a faster way to get accepted.

I say just accept the fact that these type of people will come and give them a chance to prove themselves. A person can sink themselves faster than others can.

A board ceases to be a community when it stops accepting new members and opinions, just like small towns die when they refuse to grow. If people think this board is in trouble, look not at those who built the town but those who live in it.

Perspective, friends. I'm surprised by the "elitist" comments because they sound so familiar to me. My true story:

Hi. My name is Nólaquen. I have never made a piece of music--all I do is listen to it. I started visiting oneupstudios.com message boards when I realized that I could never be accepted as part of the elitist ocremix.org or vgmix.com communities. I was not a musician and thus could not contribute to the discussions in a way that was acceptable to those who inhabited the boards there. The people were arrogant, rude, and condescending. I lost interest.

At oneupstudios.com, I found people that I liked and that liked me. Eventually, I asked previous acquaintences who I knew were running OneUp if I could help out and they put me to work on the website.

So, OneUp is elitist? Maybe. But OneUp isn't the only vg mix community that appears elitist to others.

Perhaps it's not elitism. Maybe it's just that these communities are protective of themselves. People create social bonds and begin to establish a working relationship and then someone comes along and challenges it, or throws a wrench. Of course it's going to be defended.

ocremix.org and vgmix.com both have changed a lot since then, but there are still some of the same people I contended with hanging around. But when I go to vgmix.com or ocremix.org, I know that I am a guest and I act accordingly. My words are selected with grace and the widely varying opinions respected. I don't go there and start posting rude, inconsiderate comments saying that they are all elitist. I simply go somewhere else if I don't like how they work.

I happen to like it here. I got to meet a bunch of the folks that visit here in real life just recently. Have you travelled 1600 miles to meet the people you chat with on your message boards? No? Too much effort? If so, it makes sense why a strong community would be threatening to you.

There is nothing wrong with a community trying to protect itself. oneupstudios.com does it. vgmix.com does it. ocremix.org does it. But when members of those communities try to "spread the gospel", so to speak, it becomes annoying and dangerous.

It's a matter of how it is said, not what is said. I'm not even sure why this is even an issue now. Mustin decided to unmoderate these boards so that people could more freely speak and now people are claiming that opinions get shot down...?

Anyway, if you go to a place where you are not yet a respected member, is it really appropriate to start spouting off like you know more than those who have been there for years? No, it isn't. There are ways of stating your opinion in such situations that are effective, but non-confrontational. Eventually, over time, you get to become respected.

Unfortunately, most people haven't learned how to do so, and if they have, they've been suckered into thinking that it's somehow "weak" to do so--that they must always forcefully impose their opinion on others and stand like the old tree to the heavy wind.

It's repulsive and you know it. You know it because people do it in your communities, too.

To me, this has always seemed to be lack of patience and social poise on the part of the troll. Both of those are common to younger kids, so I almost ALWAYS assume a troll is quite young. ^_^

Vocals are dime a dozen. However, here, I'm considered a respected member of the community JUST BECAUSE I'm friendly, level-headed, mature, and talkative. Imagine that. ^_~ Anyway, that's what I like about OUS, and that's why I think it'll be around for a long time, regardless of any changes made to the way things are run.

The only thing I have to suggest here is that unless a community tries really hard to be accepting, its going to appear "elitist". That's just the way relationships tend to work. You associate with people you know and are familiar with and its tough to act the same way around someone who's new.

So more than likely, on some level, claims of everyone being a "little elitist prick" are true whether you''re trying to be or not - You've just got to decide whether you feel that you are indeed "reaching out" enough.

I'm hearing all this talk about "elitism". I'm not really sure what that even means. But anyway, I've been posting on the OCR forums for two years now. When I found OUS and started posting here, there wasn't any elitism towards me. I posted like I do over at other message boards, and got welcomed into the community. I guess maybe the attitude and reputation of the poster goes into concideration. People knew me from other message boards and knew I wasn't going to be a flaming asshole.

I've been posting on the OCR boards for about as long as Walan has.

And in that time (there and here) I have found that things are not so different from the outside world, as MP pointed out way back in the beginning.

When I started posting I had never conversed with someone over the internet. I had never participated on a message board. Yet somehow I was accepted as someone who knew the score. Quite some time later I began posting here as well, and found myself welcomed and respected among a group of people with whom I had not yet interacted.

It's all about the social skills you posess. Of course it's easier to posess them over the internet, as it is an anonymous beast if you so wish it to be. If you can't apply the social skills to the real world, th is is your place to practice. This is where you should be honing your art, the art of conversation. This is where you can learn the right times and places to jump in with a remark. There is a time and a place for everything.

For example, when this very thread first started the serious post reigned supreme. This conversation, for that moment in time, was serious and needed to stay serious. Now, however, some of the tension has been released, the comments are still important, but those who are comfortable with each other can still goof around. The serious and the silly are now welcome here. Now were this to (somehow) get off this topic and on to one of a more stern nature than a silly comment would only ruin the possible conversation and ostracise the commentator.

When I started posting over on OCR I took everything I knew about conversation and simply applied it there.

Would you enter a room full of people, people engaging in multiple conversations, and spout off? Would you butt in to every conversation and hurl vulgarities? Would you run your sentences together and mispronounce the simplest of words?

I certainly would not.

That's all it takes. If you want your opinion to be respected, stand on the sidelines for a time, figure out what's going on and speak in a clear, coherent fashion about the topic that is currently being discussed.

Were someone to burst in on a real conversation and make asinine remarks, I would take that person to task then and there. Fortunately, as there is no sound, I can simply scroll past them here.

i remember whenever i got mad or had something bad happen to me, the best way for me to release my anger was to draw. then one day, i had that taken away from me when i was at school.
the only way i could release that anger and stress was to go to a forum i found. it had an area devoted to nothing but bashing ppl and creating long threads of bombs etc etc. nobody ment what they said ofcourse, and they would oftern contradic themeselves, which was a great brownie point to find and throw back at each other.
it was a great place to release tension. i got so addicted to it at one point i began asking(along with many others) for them to score points, they did, and even came up with a way to score w/l and get bonus points. it became a game to me. thats all it was, a game, to see who could win a pointless stupid argument.
i wasn't the best, nor the worst. i quite a long time ago, since i'm no longer in school.
but it was one of my fondest memories, and the best stress relievers.

perhaps we should direct 'trolls/guest/arseholes" more towards those places, so they have a point in what they're doing, a goal persay. So won't feel the need to hang around and cause pointless havoc in comunities such as this.

I, for one, try to just avoid the OCR site in general...I know a little bit about the history between OCR/OUS and just try to ignore it...I don't talk about OCR on this site and I don't go over there to start trouble. I've only ever been to OCR once or twice to download some music, but that was about it...I read the one forum topic about Mustin and the Crakaz, but didn't say anything about it.

I also don't want any trouble. As I've said, a public forum is a place where everyone should feel welcome, because everybody already has 1 thing in common when they enter a forum.

I think I see part of the problem.

Cruton & PleasureDude, you both seem to think that all of us here on the OUS boards NEVER disagree with anything we're told by the folks who run OUS. That simply isn't true. There's a lot of disagreement sometimes over stuff from the way the boards are run to whether or not we liked a particular song on the last album. The thing is, we just kinda keep most of that behind the scenes, so you don't notice us doing it. Then we try & present a united front, for the most part.

Also, please note that some of us are actually ON the OCR boards (I joined yesterday to look for a friend, myself), and we don't have anything against it. I'm quite fond of both OCR and VGMix, as I get a LOT of music from those places.

I suppose it boils down to this: by coming onto these boards and insulting OUS, you're more or less barking up the wrong tree. Mustin doesn't even read these boards anymore, so if you'd like to make your point to him, you simply can't do it here. He won't see it. As for the rest of us, some of us agree with you (re: Shonen Samurai), some of us would like to remain neutral, as we enjoy both places and don't want any kind of "rivalry" going on , some of us don't have enough information to make any kind of judgement call (that's me), and the rest of the folks just seem to be put off by your style of discussion, not your actual message.

As PleasureDude already knows, I am actually very interested in this whole debate. If you would like to bless me with a little more information on the subject so I may make an informed decision, PM me! Nope, but once upon a time, I did. Freshman dorm mattresses, holy CRAP. We put box springs under them and it helped tremendously.

I like your avatar, Matt. Do you smoke now? I haven't read through the rest of this thread past the first message, so I may be restating, but it goes like this. given your belief system, "God" or whatever has given people certain gifts and talents, and it's up to them how they use it. Some people are really talented in music and some people are talented in self expression and some people are gifted with a bunch of strength.

So, lets take all those examples. A musician who "abuses" their talent would create music that doesn't promote the human condition. For instance, music that may have a particularly negative message. A strong person who abuses their gift may beat people up instead of using their strength for something more healthy like to protect or for competition. And then, someone who is naturally da BOMB at writing/communicating, is someone who KNOWS how their words affect people and they use that to do just that ... in an abusive way.

Something I've noticed is that this usually goes with the laws of attraction. Take anyone who is using their talents in a positive way, and other people are going to recognize that. The ones who aren't as comfortable with themselves will use their talents to beat that person down to their level so they don't feel so bad about not actualizing their talents in the best way.

No talents. Just a long time listener. In regards to your topic which happens to be the same topic people have made here in other threads, I do believe there is a lot of this so-called abuse going on. Well, most of it stopped, thank goodness. For example, ops in this forum have a god given gift of moderation. For the most part, in the many examples I've shown thus far, their gift, which is typically aimed to help people has instead hurt people. Abusive moderation made this place, until recently, a very twitchy, edgy, unfriendly place where any musical criticism (see: posts by russell cox) or ettiquet criticism (see: post by protricity2k account now banned) were met with severe contempt, degradation, and typically over-moderation.

If you judge for yourself, I'm sure you'll see what I"m talking about. I always liked the quote "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can break my heart." As a listener, I'm sure you understand the concept that words can sting just as bad - at least in people who are sensitive, and vulnerable. I suppose those sorts of people do have a choice to "let" them hurt, but I think that doesn't exactly make them any less of a person or even a weak person - just a sensitive one. And looking at the alternative, I'd much rather be sensitive than INsensitive.

As far as what you say... I don't know... I think Matt was already feeling attacked and was on the defense and anything that had even the slightest negative touch to it felt like more attacks. So, when you communicate in a sarcastic/cynical sort of way and throw the truth as you see it out in such a blunt manner, it appears as tactless intead of insightful. So what you say gets lost in what is implied. And if I was in Matt's position, I think I'd react in a similar way.

Just an example, you saying that this was a "pointless" thread, sort of also implies that Matt's idea was a "pointless" idea, therefore Matt was a pointless contribution (I don't remember your word choice, but it was something like pointless or ridiculous or something like that). I know that analysis is a far stretch and totally reading into things, but that's how this kind of drama starts.

Worse, it seems that people are now supposed to take into account how their words sound in the minds of others. For the record, I think that criticism is an invaluable aspect of any art form, both for the artist and the audience. I can relate to the feeling of happiness one derives from creating something that one is proud of, and I can certainly understand the desire to protect that happiness from being deflated by negativity. Still, I think that artists who would close themselves off from the audience's honest response to their art, be it good or bad, are missing out on one of the best parts of the creative process. I also believe that the free and unrestricted exchange of opinions is an asset and not a detriment to a messageboard like this one.
