Does anybody listen to these chixorz anymore?
I mean like, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Ashley Simpson, Beyonce, Ashanti or any of those chixorz?
Just curious about the average longevity of American pop music singer careers.

As long as people continually put out good music, I'm interested.
I'm not allowed to voice my opinions about Britney Spears here as they tend to get me reamed out. But I do like most of those that you mentioned.

Britney Spears makes my ears bleed.
Christina Aguilera is good, though. Her first CD kinda sucked, but her 2nd one was awesome. Dirty and Fighter are good songs and she is damn hot.
I like Pink, too. She has a lot of good songs and depending on the shade of pink her hair is, she can be hot.

i can listen to pink and enjoy it.
If there on the radio, I wont like change the station, but I'm not gonna go buy their alubm's either. Britney Spears also tends to sing through her nose, I dont like it. :(

Yay! Opinion Time!
Christina: Girl can SING; I just wish she'd sing better songs. I do not like note slides, so the wailing she does in many of her songs, instead of the sustained swells she ROCKS at...bleh. Not to my taste. But she's got a mean set of pipes!
Mariah: I really feel this woman was an overrated hack from the beginning. When she isn't whispering the lyrics, she's screaming on pitch. Bleh. Also, she's quite 90s; I doubt many in the "pop demographic" listen to her anymore.
Jennifer Lopez: This woman has a mediocre voice. I've never liked anything she did. She's kinda boring.
Jessica/Ashley Simpson: Not heard much Jessica, and no Ashley whatsoever. Jessica subscribes too much to the "breathy bedroom voice" that disguises any semblance of singing voice a person has, and I'm not fond of that style.
Beyonce: She's got an ear for a great song. I listen to her when she comes on the radio, but I don't seek her out. Good beats usually. Very listenable. ^_^
Ashanti: Not a clue who this is.
Britney (cause how can you list all these with no Brit?): I HATE HER VOICE. She has no power. There is no...SUBSTANCE behind her voice, nothing solid. HOWEVER, that said, she (or whoever picks her songs) has an ear for a GREAT SONG. The beats are always good, the choruses always catchy, and the girl can FREAKING DANCE! "Toxic" is the only thing on my iPod by her, because there's little of her actual voice in it.
That was fun.
If you want an example of what I mean by a "solid" voice, go listen to the song "Broken Wing" by Martina McBride. Or heck, ANYTHING by Martina McBride. She's a country singer with the BIGGEST voice I've ever heard. They'd kill for a voice like that on Broadway (I think she oughta go for "Annie, Get Your Gun"). She's got a version of "O Holy Night" (yes, the Christmas carol) that never fails to bring a lump to my throat.

My opinion on "pop singers" as a whole - I tend to dislike them because I feel they're vastly overrated. They get too much airtime and too much publicity. Now, I'm not going to say they all have no talent, because a number of them do. As noted already, Christina can wail. She's got a good voice, no getting around it.
On top of that, the lot of them just aren't creative. Now, there's nothing wrong about someone cowriting your songs in their circumstances because they're performers - not artists... but popstars are just SO manufactured, I can't help but be disapointed. I'd have gobs more respect for them if they choreographed their own dances, produced their own beats, and so forth.
Again, its not that any of my one complaints is enough for me to totally dislike them - its just when everything is added up.
Oh yeah, and popstars trying to be controversial annoys me to no end. "Oh wow! I'll kiss Madonna! That'll get their feathers riled up, because... because?" Actually, anyone trying to be controversial annoys me, but popstars especially.

The same thing bugs me, Symmetry. Manufactured. Bleh. You don't have to write all your songs and your own lyrics, but just being a pop star because you're pretty & some manager thought you'd make a good pop star? That's weak. It isn't really the STAR with all the creativity in that case: it's the managers and the handlers and the people behind the scenes!

Eh, while I get a lot of pop songs stuck in my head, I usually dislike most of the singers. Most of the time they have everything written for them. Bands/singers that do nothing but cover songs aren't taken seriously and that seems like an easy way to compare.
Right now I'm listening to Loreena McKennitt, and while her voice rivals pretty much every singer listed above, plenty of people have no idea who she is. She's popular in celtic music not because of how much she's advertised, but because of her music.
And when I listen to it, I cannot help feeling that all of the instruments were synthesized, that live instruments were just not used.
Err, what's wrong with that?

Nothing, in and of itself. It's just a personal preference among some people. I agree with Baroquiel on this; I much prefer the sound & feel of live instruments. Or, at the very least, instruments that haven't been mixed to DEATH.

accordiong to Bjork, "instruments are so over."
I like live instruments better than synthesized ones, but I can stand synth pop. I like 80's synth pop. That stuff rules.

Yes.
Nothing wrong with electronica at all.

I think all the chick pop singers are hot and I'd marry them after I marry Lindsay Lohan. But Christina is the only one who can sing to me.

I adore jessica simpson's voice. I was a big fan BEFORE all of the mtv shizzle.
and you've gotta respect christy A.'s voice. Powerful, strong, soulful.

Yer damn right. If it hadn't been for their album graphics tho, I prolly wouldn't have picked them up.

I wanted to amend my post a little. Ashlee Simpson. Found her on iTunes, listened to demos, and promptly downloaded 3 of her songs. She has a decent voice, and whoever picks her songs doesn't do half bad; they're great for her voice, and she has a style distinctly different from her older sister. Still not a Jessica fan, but I'll listen to Ashlee. Kinda like Avril Lavigne in my book. Little pop girlies who are trying to be rock: that's my guilty pleasure. ^o^
Plus, when we have little Creeches, and they tell me they want to dress entirely in Avril Lavigne's wardrobe...well, I'll quote Creech.
"What sweetie? You want to wear baggy black pants that don't show your pelvic bone and huge hoodie sweatshirts that leave no trace of a figure for dirty old men to ogle? SURE sweetheart! Let's go to Hot Topic right now. Do you want some wristwarmers, too? Maybe a necktie?"
Y'know. As opposed to letting my someday-12-year-old daughter wear pants that almost AREN'T pants and those backless shirts that might as well be a blinking sign that says "I'm not wearing a bra!" Grown women wearing that stuff is one thing, but when you're a young girl (or a role model for very young girls), I'm not cool with that.

Grown women wearing that stuff?! Any woman who where's those kind of clothes is slutty, young or old...besides, that kind of style is designed for younger girls, anyway. I don't want to see scantily-clad OLD women, there's no appeal in that!

Being 25, I do not have QUITE the same concept of age as you do, Barrett. I'm talking about women old enough to make their own decisions about what to wear. When I think of someone too young to wear hip huggers and backless shirts with no bra, I'm thinking of girls under the age of 18. After that point, it's theirs to decide what they want to wear. I am NOT talking about 50 year old women wearing Britney clothes.

I like Britney Spears. I think "toxic" is a really sexy song. You gotta be able to see through the BS in order to appreciate it, though. I like it. I don't think it's "good" which might not make sense, but it's the best way to put it. As for the others, don't really listen to pop music besides Justin Timberlake.

Wow, Kassi. That's PRECISELY the way I feel about Toxic. It is not a "good" song, technically, but there are many things about it that appeal to me, therefore I enjoy listening to it.

Kurt Vonnegut once asserted that all music is sacred. I think that what he means by that is not that all music is "good", but that every piece of music out there means something to someone. We can all wax philosophic about what constitutes "meaning" in music, but I prefer to simply learn about peoples' individual tastes. Which is why I post on a VGM board - this is a totally new genre to me.
Plus, don't we all have songs that we're kind of embarrassed to admit we like? "Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross is one of those songs for me.

Food for thought. Here's a quote from a pretty well-known rock star about his favorite genre of music (which is rock - wow!) that I've always liked. I really think it applies to all types of music. Just substitute your favorite genre:
"Rock music is important to people because in this crazy world it allows you to face up to problems, but at the same time to sort of dance all over 'em."

Speaking of brainless, I find it ironic how you'd attack on a whim someone you clearly do not even understand. I can assure you through personal correspondence that you're wrong.
Judging by your previous posts I'd infer that you have the intelligence of an emoticon. I suggest you cease and desist this poorly-contrived trollfest and seek out differen't refuge for which to be an idiot.
Did I hit a nerve, biscuit boy? It's no wonder that I'd offend your vgmix frequenting taste (or lack thereof). Dicks and twats go together, I suppose.

Fuck you dipshit. There ain't no fucking nerves here. Normally I wouldn't waste my fucking time swatting at you shit eating fly, but this is one person I will not suffer you to assault. So stop it. NOW.
