So, so good. And thats probably due to my very small level of involvement. Dshu rocks my face off. Greg's performance was exquisite. I heart Mazedude's arrangement so much. Christian owns - I got lost in his arrangements - so inspired. William's playing left me breathless. Everyone did an outstanding job.

This is the strongest, cleanest thing to come out of OneUp yet.

Are you saying that you're wimpy and dirty? 8O

I have to say, though, that the album itself has continually taken my thoughts away from the stresses of the day. I only remember a few of the orignals, but with this album it doesn't really matter. The arrangements and the soundscapes are good enough to stand on their own. Relaxing, but engaging is how I'd describe it.

Nah, I'm a cleanly man - but I am pretty wimpy.

Relaxing/engaging is a good description

I dont have it yet. :(
But the song from Rush's show was damn good. I can't wait for the CD. Then I'll totally drool over it in the proper manner.

I must have said this many times, but still. I totally dig this album. It's very relaxing and I'm starting to love some tracks, which I didn't really liked in the beginning, more and more.

Christian's songs are great, though, it's not really my style, but that's changing.
The Wingless rocked my butt off! What a great changes he made.
Dale, as always awesome!
Tim, it's all about the Rhodes man.

Everybody did great. Hope we can all work together sometime.

Man, I came home expecting the Dragon Quest VIII OST, but was pleasently surprised when I found this. I can't believe it's here. Heck, a day before street date. I haven't listened to all that much, what with homework to do, but from what I've heard, it's amazing. Completly worth the wait. As I've said before, I discovered this site by searching randomly for Xenogears Piano. I have waited patiently for this for about a year, and I'm surprised by how it holds up to my expectations.

All the music is beautiful. I cannot describe them in words. Well, not now, after I listen to it more and finish piano homework I'm sure I can describe it better. The case is cool and the linear notes are great as well (I missed the remixer's comments with VBOS). The way the Xenogears quotes are in there is also awsome. Completly different than I thought it would be. The sheet music is also a great bonus, thanks.

No real complaints, I would have liked them to be numbered, but hey, it's in my hands now, so I can't complain.

To anyone who hasn't ordered it yet, do so now. You don't want to miss out. To all the staff, thanks. I wish I could give you more than my thanks and $30, but that's it. Take the day off guys, you deserve it.

Always impresed,
Bryan

Was very pleased to see it arrive in the mailbox today. All 4 discs and 4 sheets of Broken Mirror sheet music. HAWT. One was autographed by the lovely Mustin, the handsome Dhsu, and the FABulous Daru Norff. Three sealed copies remained, one of which went directly to my mom. Two left and oh shit... The disc was loose in one of them! SHIT! Opened it up to find it crazy scratched. Damn.
Listened to this bitch at work all day, and this is absolutely the perfect "background music" CD... This isn't the CD you want to listen to when you're driving a car or clubbin. This is the PERFECT CD to listen to while doing paperwork, web surfing, taxes, boxing up CDs, or going to bed.
The whole CD was incredible and was worth every penny.
Also, it has quite possibly the funniest liner notes EVER... I honestly laughed out loud for a good two minutes when I read Dale's "thoughts" on the song he performed. And how many people like walks on the beach anyways?? Especially who are in FUCKING OKLAHOMA??? And single.... *giggle*

The packaging is also quite fantastic and rivals the packaging of SQUAREDANCE's Limited Edition. Great DVD style case with a horizontal layout instead of vertical. Quite unique. Loved the colors and the inner covers are a great read.

MISTAKES!!!
Yes! I found TWO mistakes already!
First is on the back of the case, it says "Based on games rated E" while Xenogears was a T rated game!
Also, on the disc itself is the first typo to be found! The misspelled word is "authorised" instead of "authorized"

All in all, this is a tremendous effort that gets FIVE dancing milks (out of 5)...

And yes, I noticed the "E" when I picked it up. Should be "Music" instead of "Games." We'll have it fixed for next time.

Well, back to the topic......

Yeah, I'm really floored by this CD. It seriously is excellent. All of the arrangements are top notch and the playing is superb. Were ALL of the instruments played live? There are several instances where performances (mostly the piano) aren't credited.

One little issue I do have is that the violin sounds too thin to my ear. Greg's performances are very good, but it seems to me like they needed a little more oomph while playing or a bit more massaging and body in the mixing. It's especially evident in "Grahf", but is better in "Shattering the Egg" (that violin part from 2:30 is absolutely wonderful).

Aside from that (and I really don't mean to rip on it or him, because it's still terrifically done), this music is truly phenomenal (Christian, I am owned by "Bonds of Sea and Fire"). I'm going to force people to buy this at gunpoint, I think.

This CD is great - even better on CD than when we heard the mp3's!! Bizarre -

I'm glad I got extra copies because I have to give them to my parents, my editor, etc etc - Look for my Music4games.net feature on this album next month! I'll treat it as a post-mordem to the CD making process and I'll probably want to get bit quotes from Mustin and a few of the other composers. Email me if you're an arranger that wants to be featured or lend some advice :)

Again, thanks guys! Really cool seeing my arrangement show up in paper!

i got it!!! this album is absolutely phenomenal. each and every track is well arranged and filled with emotion. i wouldnt settle for just listenting to it while working or sleeping. This cd is worth listening to for the sake of listening to it. the quality(both sound and arrangement) is incredible. Im sure Mitsuda is very proud. This was worth every penny. and i cant wait to start playing that sheet music! i'll be listening to this one for a long long long long long time. i think i'll write a review soon. great job, everyone who had a part in this! this album is 10 times better than i could've ever imagined.

IT'S FUCKING BRILLIANT!

I got it today, and I've just given it a quick listen on crappy headphones, but even so I'm impressed. There isn't a single song on there that doesn't give me a joygasm.

Usually, I want to pick one or two favorites and post about them, but I love all of them. This is definitely one of my new favorite CDs. Not my top favorite, but hey, second only to Time & Space is nothing to be frowned apon.

My parents haven't heard it yet, but I'm willing to wager a fair amount that my dad at least will become a fan of Mitsuda and OUS after hearing it, and maybe my mom as well.

I just got my copy. It's great, though I was a little sad at not scoring an autographed copy, and I don't know if it's #108 or not, but hey, it's the music that really counts, right? If I want I can take a marker and put 108 on it and make Mustin and co. sign it when before I gun them down, I mean, next time I see them.

I just got it today. Listening to it as I'm posting.

So I have to say "wow." I thought I was just buying this album for completeness's sake as I tend to not really dig the lighter remixes. But I was shocked by how well this music works in this style. Like this is really really good. You guys rocked the cosmos.

But, Mustin, you haven't played Xenogears. ; ; And you don't even particularly dig its music. ; ;

Bad Mustin. No cookie.

Wow guys, this is amazing.

I couldn't wait to get this CD, I was so excited about it. It has exceeded my expectations in every way. All of the instrument playing is top notch, and the arrangements are beautiful. I've never played Xenogears and I've only heard it's music in a few remixes, but this is awesome. I've always loved and been inspired by piano music, and this is definitely some of my favorite piano music ever. The packaging is GREAT as well! The horizontal style was a surprise and looks really cool, and the art looks great and blends well with the clear plastic case. The liner notes are very well done and I was excited to see the sheet music, I can't wait to check it out.

So, in short: wonderful job guys. I'm having eargasms.

Congrats on an awesome album, I really enjoyed it. I am, however, irritated with a tiny problem. I don't know if this was intentional, but all of the sound seems to be coming from the left channel. Could somebody confirm this for me? When playing the CD or the mp3s via any number of methods, this seems to be the case. I can set the left/right balance all the way to the right, crank the volume, and barely hear anything. Set it back 100% to the left, and it's clear as day. I'm satisfied with the music itself, but this is not what I'd expect for $30. Anybody else experiencing this?

The only problem I had was the fact that the CD wasn't secured in the box, so it slid around and got a little bit scratched on the thing that was supposed to be holding it. But it still plays good.

Just got my copy today, and I gotta say, I love it. I think the description used earlier of it being "relaxing and engaging" is most appropriate. The pieces rely heavily on piano, which gives them their relaxing quality; yet the arrangements, while soothing, are also complex and also occasionally make use of other instruments as well, which keeps things interesting.

Oh, and I recently began taking piano lessons, so the sheet music that came with the album will not going to waste, and I consider it a nice bonus.

So, all in all, excellent work.

I got my package today! Or actually a few days ago...but I finally got to open it today.

First of all, I'm really touched you recognized me in the liner notes, Mustin. It was already a huge honor you guys took my suggestion two years ago and turned it into reality. Props for Dale for starting it the project...and much credit for Mustin for working hard to finish it. And can't forget about the musicians. Thank you all for making this possible.

Thanks for the extra copy. Given how limited this album is, that was unexpected. Your generosity and that little note you scribbled on the box is much appreciated. (1 to Grow on. Thanks for the idea + your support! - Mustin) I know I will cherish this album.

Much thanks to Mustin, Dale North, and David Hsu for signing both copies. You guys rock. I'm definitely going to listen to this when I head off to sleep later.

Phew, I was starting to think nobody'd noticed it was even there. Thanks! :)

In my mind, nothing could possibly beat the awesomeness that is "The Blue Traveler." The original was so plain, but Christian went and make it kickass. Awesome work.

For some reason, the beginning of "Dreams of the Strong" reminds me of "Stories to Tell" from Trigun. Does anybody else think so, or am I just imagining it? Maybe it's just the flute + piano combo...

I'm sitting here listening to the third track right now.

The second track (Grahf, Conqueror of Darkness) is a track that I have always skipped over on the OST. I hate how it is on the OST.

Your arrangement actually made me listen to this track. Then go back and listen again.

If this is any indication, I expect the rest of the CD to be just as amazing.

Also: WOW on the included sheet music! I was not expecting that at all. :)

I got my copy today. I was unfortunately not at home or something when the mail came and so it sat in the post office all weekend starting on Friday. Made me pretty antsy when I discovered that particular PO closes at noon on Saturdays. I don't even wake up before noon on Saturdays.

I can add my voice to the masses that love the album for being "relaxing and engaging." After all the reports related to how soothing it was, I was pretty anxious for my copy. I've been working a ton of different personal projects at once for a while and really needed some soothing stuff. I woke up this morning thinking I should probably track down a spa and get a body massage (no Fensler joke intended) for all the aches that've been building up. It was raining pretty hard. I got soaked walking through it. And I knew it'd get roasting hot as soon as it was done.

I came on home, met up with a pal, and popped the disc in.

One of the first things that struck me about the album is that it serves what I feel is one of the most important aspects of music thats intended to relax you -- it fits into almost any background. I turned it on and started playing a new video game (turning the game's music off, of course, so I could hear the CD) but otherwise forgot the thing was on until it was almost done. It's not quite atmospheric ... in fact, it's almost better. There's still some aches and pains and I still have to finish projects, but I definitely feel much more at ease and optimistic about the outcomes. My fingers don't hurt as much as they did when I woke up.

I've listened to the album overall a couple of times by this post and I don't really have a particular favorite just yet. "Dreams of the Strong" was one of my favorite pieces from the original soundtrack, so I'm tempted to lean towards that, but "Broken Mirror" sticks it as well.

I'm really happy that there's not only so much quality but also quantity. At 20 tracks, you can really start it and leave it on until whenever.

Thanks very much to everyone involved in the project. I anticipated the album being awesome and so already pre-ordered a copy for my best friend, but I'll recommend this to all my buddies.

Still wish it was named Shake the Ivories was a really cool album name, though.

Quick question -- did you have to ask for permission on using the Xenogears 'X' in the album art? Was that easy/hard compared to licensing the music?

Heh, exact opposite here. Grahf's theme was one of my favorites on the OST, and I didn't expect it to be good in piano, but yet again I'm pleasantly surprised. Though, the OST does have the problem with all those samples with clicks in them, so maybe I'm just glad to hear the theme without having to force myself to not hear the clicks. *slaps stupid bad clicky samples*

*Also wonders if his sheet music has flattened out now that he put it between several large books.*

I listen to this a lot at work. I'm doing so now, in fact.

I am EXTREMELY fond of "My Village is Number One"; that's probably my favorite. However, "Shevat" comes in VERY close. To be honest, I'm having a hard time breaking the songs away from each other. This entire album is so very cohesive that it even sounds perfectly natural with the songs on shuffle. It's a bit like an art collection. Each piece is different and has it's own feel, but they are obviously meant to be together, and they work very harmoniously to create the whole album.

Beautiful stuff, guys. My mom wants a copy for her very own. ^_^

Hey guys - I really like track 1 - Premonition - not only is it one of my favorite Xeno themes but it really sets the tone for the collection as a whole - and that's an important thing - takes a great track to do so.

I also listen to the CD on shuffle oftentimes - it seems to just work. very cohesive. :)

Wow. This is some of the best stuff I've ever heard. Broken Mirror, My Village is Number One, and The Treasure That Cannot Be Stolen are like.... amazing.

I have a question about the sheet music though, *gets stupidly nerdy* at measures 58 and 59, does the tie shown on the G apply to the E as well? (feel free to kill me if it does)

No, you strike the E twice - it is a sort of suspension that resolves in the F above Middle C in Measure 60 - it's in the bass clef but you can play it in the r.h. if you want.

As with a lot of the other people here, I've listened to the CD every night as I go to sleep. The CD is so perfectly suited for relaxing to, so I doubt that it's going to be leaving that CD player any time soon.

And since people seem to be posting things about their favorite songs, I might as well do the same (with the expected disclaimer that every song kicks ass, so don't think I don't like your song because dammit, I do like your song). My favorite is definitely "Ship of Sleep and Remorse". I loved the original, and setting it for guitar and piano was the perfect idea. Actually, if it were for guitar solo, I would have crapped my pants out of delight, but this being a piano album with other instruments, the song is just how it should be.

How satisfying, this album.

Just got the album today. Listening to it as I post this. The case and liner notes are great. The liner notes are very informative, they compliment the music very nicely. The sheet music was a great addition, even though I don't play piano, my friend does, so i'll get him to play it sometime.

EDIT: I've had a chance to listen through it a few times now. The music is fantastic. My three favorite songs are probably Grahf, Ship of Sleep and Remorse, and Broken Mirror. I don't listen to it while i sleep because I can't sleep with any type of music, no matter how light/relaxing it is. Great stuff though, definitly recomended.

Only one word can describe Xenogears Light. "Beautiful".

I listened to it 5 hours straight from the moment I got it. I was actually, in the middle of playing Xenosaga 2 when I got it... and I quickly forgot what I was doing and was drowned in the music. Far Away Promise, Broken Mirror and Gathering Stars in the Night Sky are my favorites.

i listened to it for 3hours straight today as i made up a TON of math work(i'm such a slacker). I used to listen to a cd with all of joshua morse's songs when i did this amount of work, mostly because of the duration, but this cd really gets the job done and keeps me focused. "Broken Mirror" and "The Treasure Which Cannot Be Stolen" are simply beautiful.

everyday a new song jumps out at me. "shattering the egg of dreams" is so great. every song is awesome. great job again!

You have NO idea how happy you just made me, just then. Thank you VERY much, it's good to know that at least someone out there enjoys my arrangement :P

The rest of the album is awesome. Heck, my mum loves the album so therefore it must be gold. I don't really have much else new to add to what everybody else has said (it's relaxing, awesome, Mustin can I be your son etc)

EDIT: sorry, technicality, it's not my arrangement anymore, I sold it. ^^ glad you liked what I gave birth to, and someone else fed and looked after until it grew up into a mature arrangement.

EDIT EDIT: I don't remember making the previous edit. I have a feeling the Matrix is doing it. But they are, in a sense, correct. Although I don't like how the implication is that the arrangement was "immature" before I sold it for five copies of the CD which I'm not so sure I should have done now. So, I'm glad you enjoy, uh, whatever monster it's become.

It's been a few weeks since I got the album, so it's about time I chime in.

Great album. The perfect album to relax to. I've been playing this cd while studying, browsing the internet, and even while sleeping. The best way I can describe the music is being constant and steady. It was so worth the two years of waiting. Hopefully the two friends I convinced into buying this album are enjoying it as well.

The only "complaint" I have is that I have a hard time recognizing some of the original melodies in some of the tracks. It's probably just me, though...those very tracks are still a pleasure to listen to.

I'll be sure to post up a track by track review sometime soon.

BTW, whatever happened to that Dazil, City of Burning Sands track The Wingless made? I know it was an example, but can you guys post it up in its entirity? I'd love to add that track to my playlist. Thanks.

Ha, I doubt it's just you. In fact, in the case of my track, it was practically the intention. :D I think it just makes it that much cooler when you realize what track it used to be and how drastically different it's become.

Hello, being new to this forum I must first introduce myself. My name is Eric Bittermann and I live in the south Chicagoland area. Being a musician now for over 16 years (percussion and piano) and an avid video game player/music listener I stumbled across this album off of squaresound.com. I was already a fan of xenogears and to see the music arranged in this way was a breath of fresh air. I am a huge fan of the creid arranged album, but still there was something lacking from it that 'light' provided. After owning the album now for about 2 weeks I must say that all of you did a awesome job both in the performance and arranging of this project, and props to you Mustin for putting this together!!! I will posting a exhaustive review within the next 2 days if anyone would like read. Also, for Mitsuda fans- I've been working on a Chrono tribute album in various styles now for about 2 years- it has everything from hard rock to jazz and acoustic peices. Be looking for that by summer. I'll post the link when its ready. Anyway...if any OneUp Mushrooms live near Chicago let me know. I would love some more arrangers on the project or just to jam. Once again..thank you for a professional done album that should make Mitsuda proud!

SquareSound review (http://ww.squaresound.com/xg_tim_light.shtml)

HE GAVE "MY VILLAGE IS NUMBER ONE" AND "BONDS OF SEA AND FIRE" BAD SCORES WHAT THE MESS OMGLOLBBQ2.

Although it seems this review isn't trying to be objective so much as it is voicing his personal opinion of the album. And it sounds like he didn't know it was specifically designed to be a relaxing album, with all the talk of "exuding power" in Broken Mirror.

Still, I appreciate his honesty. Thanks, Tim.

Hey Guys,

Tim from SquareSound here. I hope that I haven't offended anyone with my opinions of this album. I really had no business writing that review, but felt compelled to do so when Mustin sent it to me for coverage on SquareSound. Most reviews are just personal opinion, but most people who write album reviews have some kind of musical background to backup their opinions. My musical background consists of about four years of piano lessons and a music theory class in college. In other words, I really don't have a musical background, and I wanted to make that clear in the review. The review is nothing more than my personal opinion, so please take it what was said with a grain of salt. When Chris posts his review next week, I'm sure you'll get a much more musical perspective on the album. I just tend to prefer simpler arrangements that don't deviate much from the original work. I'm simple-minded, I know. ;)

As for the final score, I gave the album a 94% rating because I thoroughly enjoyed it on the whole. To me, any album that contains more than 4-5 songs (or pieces, in this case) that I consider excellent is an excellent album. There were quite a few pieces on the Xenogears OST that I didn't really like, but I still adore the album as a whole.

Anyway, after reading the comments in this forum about the review, I just felt compelled to explain things a bit. Again, I know I really had no business writing the review based on my background, so I'm sorry if anyone is offended by my comments. As stated in the review, I want you guys to know that you have talents that I could only dream of, and I very much look forward to your work in the future.

Take care,

Tim

Oh godness, I think I'm the odd one out - the album just hasnt clicked with me yet and Im struggling to work out why. Its bizarre.

"My Village Is Number One", "Bonds Of Fire And Sea" and "Broken Mirror" are my fav trio after the second listen. Each song has something that sets it apart from the rest which is always a definately bonus but I think some arrangements are just not how I would have percieved them to be nor do some of them fit comfortably with that arrangement. There's also a lot of slightly out of tune notes which sound cool in places but not in others.

I think this will a "grower" for me. Normally Piano albums come straight into my thought stream on the first listen but I think some of the arrangements here will take time to get used to but I'm definately prepared to sit and take time with the CD - its the least it deserves!

Best of luck with the sales!

Heh heh, I think Broken Mirror, the original soundtrack version, exudes all the power of a Barbara Streisand ballad. And either you love it or you hate it. :)

And Sure, the arrangement style was homogenized somewhat, but it was intentional due to the constraints put forth: it had to tweak the original song but still be playable (at least most parts) - and i like to sort of settle into a groove.

In returning to the theme at the end (which is sort of the A B A' format), it closes the piece (just as the actual recording does), but this time it's been modified by the rhythmic figures of the B section (if you listen closely you'll see what i mean). I like the very end, as it sort of arpeggiates upwards- it's fun to play.

I remember when I was young, some parts were too hard and I'd just skip them as long as i had some easier parts of a piano piece that i could still sink my teeth into. That's sorta what Broken Mirror does - the middle section in Eb is tricky at first, but with some practice (feel the rhythm and use both hands to play it), it's quite cool.

Anyway just my own commentary on Broken Mirror. I see a lot of people seem to enjoy it - I wonder how those who actually play piano have had a chance to play it or what not? Personally it looks harder on paper than when I have it in my mind.. :) so, good luck and let me know if you have more performance/fingering questions.

Jay

I got Xenogears Light yesterday, and I love many songs. Gathering Stars (I'm a fan of Dale North's stuff) is of course a great song, and Paul van de Geijn's The Treasure Which Cannot be Stolen is terrific as well. Broken Mirror, Singing of the Gentle Wind (fan of Kaijin as well), Far Away Promise, all terrific!

Just so everybody knows, I've now posted my full review of the album here (http://www.squaresound.com/xg_chris_light.shtml).

I've tried to be as objective as possible with the review, but certain subjective aspects obviously influenced what I said. For example, I know a lot of people think that Christian Pacaud did exactly the right thing with "Bonds of Sea and Fire," whereas I thought it was a little overly complicated. Similarly, I didn't care that much for the first part of "Broken Mirror," but I expect many others appreciate it much more than me. Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading what I said about the album and that you are not in any way insulted by the occasional negative comments I made. I really did think that this was truly remarkable album and I can't wait to hear more from you guys in the future.

Thanks, Mr. Maul! Your review was simply the best summarization I've read on any site that has review this project thus far! A job well done, and... I definately loved the score on my track. It was actually nerve-racking being the first piano solo to be heard. Ever sine I looked at the track list, I was like "What if no one likes it? Will it damage the entire experience of the album?". But after seeing two nice scores from Squaresound, I guess I was terribly wrong. At least it's a good kind of wrong, ;) lol.

Into Eternal Sleep is the most relaxing track on the album (IMO of course). I love the flowing use of dynamics, especially how it's done with the scaling two-note repetition* from 1:55 to near the end.

*I hope that phrase makes sense, as I'm not greatly familiar with musical terms.

The other songs that really stand out to me are Dale's Gathering Stars in the Night Sky. (His third arrangement of the song!) I really can't say much but that it appeals to me emotionally. The same with The Treasure Which Cannot Be Stolen & Singing of the Gentle Wind. (Although I wish Tim could have done more with the second part of the song, as he mentions in the liner notes.)

While the effort you put forth was appreciated, I feel as if you bastardized these songs much like those idiots from OverClockedRemix do on a regular basis (Techno Aeris theme? Fuck you, Overclocked). Grahf's theme was transformed from dark and forboding to limp-dicked.

Those Black Mages are bastards! BASTARDS, I say!

I feel that a rearrangement doesn't have to be a nod to the original - the only thing that is really required to make it an arrangement is that it borrows a significant amount of musical ideas. It could be a totally different or original genre (see DJ Crono @ OCR) and still be satisfying to me. I try not to tie every piece of music to the original or I lose some enjoyment.

I wish I had Time & Space. :(

I'm not regetting that I got the album though. I apologize for sounding far too harsh. I fully respect everyone's work here, it just didn't meet my tastes (hell if everyone was satisfied with everything, we'd have no problems in the world). As for composers rearranging their music, I've listened to The Black Mages and while some of their songs are decent (as were yours, I failed to specify that I did like some of the songs) others were downright aweful unlike the songs on your album.
Your album had a theme, unlike Black Mages Vol 2 where some of the songs were just like "WTF" such as the arrangement "The Skies Above" which sounded rediculous with that guy (was it Nobuo?) singing.

I just want to express my thanks for making this album and being true to yourselves and your theme, I'm considering getting my mom a copy for Mother's Day because she absolutely ADORED it. :)

Got my copy today, I've listened to it a couple of times so far. I think this is some of the finest "chilling out to" music. The arrangements are fairly faithful to the original pieces, and they do wonders on soothing my shot nerves after the stressful day I've had at work. At this point, I can't pinpoint favorites per say, but Josh Barron and Will Buck's arrangements impressed me the most thus far. Excellent work, guys !

I got the album on Wednesday, and I must say I'm very impressed. I missed out on the opportunity to get a copy of Time & Space, so I didn't exactly know what to expect. I've always loved Xenogears and the Xenogears OST, so the instant I saw this on your page, I ordered a copy.

I like the vast majority of the arrangements, even though a few of them are not quite to my taste.

In particular, I like "Premonition," "Tears of the Stars, Hearts of the People," "One Who Bears Fangs at God," Ship of Sleep and Remorse," "Broken Mirror," The Blue Traveller," "Gathering Stars in the Night Sky," and "The Alpha and Omega."

The last one, was impressive to me because, in addition to standing on its own, it gave me an appreciation for the only track on the Xenogears OST I didn't really like that much.

I do think that there could have been a good arrangement of "One Who is Torn Apart," though. Not that I've met a single other person who likes that track like I do, heh...

But, this has inspired me to go out and purchase a Yamaha board for private practicing. If I don't have it memorized and can't play it by August, someone must have killed me a month before. :D

Ooh, where to start first?

The album packaging was brilliant; an inverse of the logo. Instead of the red "X" with a black background, you made it a light-blue/turqouise "X" with a white background!

Then, the interior of the packaging was nice, too; you actually printed some many quotes on the back of the cover art. It was fun reading again every last one of them, and I was surprised of some of the quotes you put there! You even documented the ridiculous dialogue from Tolone's and Seraphita's first appearance!

Throwing in the piano sheet music was a nice bonus, too. Just looking at it and trying to read it makes me want to learn how to read and perform piano music.

And then there's the music itself. It's perfect concentration/relaxation music, and I often find myself humming it, back-to-back with my other favorite classical and orchestral pieces when I'm not actually listening to it.

The quality of the music is just so good, my colleagues mistake it for Beethoven or Mozart!

This cd took a bit longer to get into then volume 1/time & space, mostly just because of a lack of time and more effort to initially get into softer music without dozing off.

Anyway, the cd is absolutely amazing.
Some favorites are Singing of the Gentle Wind, One Who Bares Fangs At God, and Treasure Which Cannot Be Stolen...also Broken Mirror

Really like them all, on terms of sound quality however, there is one thing I notice. I don't know if the piano is particularly difficult to record well or what not, but there is one thing I can think of to compare it to. The FF piano collections, number IX comes to mind right now. The piano in those just seems to come alive and make the desk shake on the low notes. The piano recordings on this cd, while perfectly crystal clear, doesn't sound like it has power on the low notes. However the other instruments recorded sound great, such as those used in bares fangs at god. but such as 'bonds of sea and fire' right after fangs of god, the piano I can hear is trying its hardest to use those low notes, it just doesn't get reproduced as such.

It's hard to explain oherwise, but I assure you that when listening to the piano on this cd, then listening to the piano recorded in FFIX PC. Track 1, Eternal Harvest, there is a noted quality difference. It may not be that significant to some people, and you may or may not be able to even tell the difference based on what kind of speakers you're using. Who knows... I also noticed the quality difference with the piano in June Mermaid in Time & Space.

Anyhow, that's not to say that the piano arrangements and performance is amazing, beautifully done.
Excellent job, and I like having a signed copy :>

Currently I'm listening to Volume 1 more often than this, which on other notes has astounding quality sound on every track....but this cd is definately up there. I really love Xenogears music, and you guys did an amazing job at not messing any of it up and bringing it back alive.

Not a fan of Grahf. A very good job at translating between music styles, but I think the whole tone just sounds awkward for this type of CD.

I was pleasantly surprised with everything else though! I wasn't too ecstatic about the songs from the demo clips, but it all ended up much better then I imagined. Nice job!

Still wish I could hear what you all could do with Klonoa music, but alas.

Heh, I actually wrote that. If you don't believe me, check the e-mail link at the bottom. Nice to see someone noticed my review besides the guy who sent me an e-mail telling me it was well written, but he thought that the music sucked. Oh well.

I actually *did* suspect that they weren't actual piano performances. Something subtle about it just doesn't sound totally real. (But, I *am* known to be an audio nitpick, so don't take it too harshly. ;P) It's really too bad they couldn't have had a real piano to record with for such a piano-centric album, but then they'd have to get the piano and either rent out studio time for high recording quality or record it not quite as well. And I imagine they probably didn't have the finances for either. =/

Did Dhsu use his own electronic piano for Into Eternal Sleep? Because, to me, the piano articulation in his song sounds different from (and nicer than) the rest of the CD.

CPacaud
03-25-2006, 06:48 PM
I think Dhsu did record the midi performance and Mustin rendered it.

About recording with a real piano, it also involved finding a profesionnal performer, finding time to rehearse with him, Mustin would've had to direct the performances and recording sessions, rent a studio, pay the performer, etc...

LOTS of money and time involved.

At least it sounds very believable and real unlike a certain symphonic project with horrible symphonic non-symphonicness

Generally the album is very good, but much darker than the title of the album suggested. This maybe due to the fact that C.Pacaud arranged many of themes and his dissonant harmonic style doesn't really provide a light feel.

The piano performances were generally on the good side, though occasionally a little robotic. The tone of the piano is a little too bright for my tastes and sometimes there are unrealistic dynamics (some notes in some pieces go way below for what is possible for a piano recorded that close). Also when the pedal is used the intermingling of the notes creates a bit of a nasty sound - this could be a number of things e.g. the piano tone, the dissonant notes the arranger put in, the dissonant notes played too loud etc.

Sometimes I felt that a track could do without the piano, but I'm guessing the aim was to have a piano in each track.

The liner notes are great though, and the acoustic performances worked well with the synth piano. Greg Kennedy is a great violinist and that guy who played guitar was great too (I've forgotten his name!). A few of my favourite tracks are Will Buck's, Blak_Omen's and Luke Nickel's, but that track that was suitable for people who are high was good too (I've forgotten the name of the tune). It's a very generous CD and a good listen.

Heh. You're so open and honest with the artists who made the music about scamming them.

It's not really a big deal, since the CD is fine, but somehow the DVD case managed to get a hole punched through it just recently. o_o Go figure. I've had this for quite some time too.... I'm kind of reluctant to bring my originals with me on trips now though. I still have no idea how it happened though, it was just lying in my backpack.

The Mustin
04-03-2007, 01:01 AM
Yeah, always copy those originals or at least put them on your .MP3 player is you have one. As soon as I buy a CD, I rip it to .MP3 and the listen to it while reading the liner notes and then the CD is almost never played again and filed into my drawer.

A reprint of Xeno is coming soon, but in CD form without sheet music and all the special liner notes.

I first wanted to say to all the people who helped in the creation of this album - incredible job. I LOVE it. I was always sad when I thought how awesome the piano collections were for the final fantasy games and how there would never be one for xenogears. A work of art that is irreplaceable to say the least.

Is there any way to get the sheet music for any of the pieces? It exists so why not put it all together and sell it? I'd gladly pay a good amount for the piano parts. I just started teaching myself piano since coming to college and the thought of one day being able to play these songs to myself (in addition to all those final fantasy arrangements) is really...amazing. Music is really priceless so what is any amount of money compared to being able to play these songs, even if it was just once?

So if any of it is available, please please please contact me at simplethird@gmail.com and I'll love you forever (not that I don't already for creating this album)

Sorry to just randomly post here, but I would like to ask your assistance.
I would very very much appreciate if someone could inform me of how I might contact whoever did the piano part for track 12 Broken Mirror. It's quite important to me.
I hope this request doesn't sound too weird or anything.
If someone would be kind enough to help me out, the best way is to contact me on AIM or MSN or Email.
AIM: Kelix Malachite
YIM: Kelix Malachite
MSN: Tum0spoo@hotmail.com
Email: same as MSN

If you want to know why, it's because I would really like to get a hold of the sheet music to play it. It's quite important to me.
Thanks.
