View Full Version : Legend of Zelda series

If you ask me, the most memorable games in the series were
Link to the Past (SNES)
and
Link's Awakening (GB)
I didn't like the first-person view of the N64 Zeldas.
How many of us here thought Majora's Mask was a cheap re-hash of Ocarina of Time,
considering that so many graphics and music pieces were re-used, along with the entire gameplay engine?
And who among us thought Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages were cheap re-hashes of Link's Awakening?
I actually enjoyed Majora's Mask more than Ocarina of Time, considering that you could walk around faster with the Bunny Hood,
and the game also had a better town, too. Don't like skulking around dungeons 24/7 you know, especially at a snail's pace!
Oracle of Seasons was cool, but it was also rather easy and over too quick; I've never played Oracle of Ages.
As for the two games listed back up top, I could play those over as many times as I wanted without getting tired of them!

I loved them all! I did think that Majora's Mask was a rehash OoT but it had a good story too. And I loved the newer GB games especially the story. It was great. But of couse the best one was LttP.

The original Legend of Zelda is my own personal cocaine and nothing else in the entire Zelda series has ever matched that addictiveness.
Edited for crappy proofreading.

Personally, whenever I feel like replaying a Zelda game, I usually go for II.

Personal confession: I've never beaten the original, or Wind Waker. Or even played them very much.
My favorites were Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Link's Awakening, in that order.
I thought Majora's Mask was pretty good, and not really much of a rehash at all. Yes, it used the same graphics and gameplay engines, and much of the same music, but there was way too much new to really call it a "rehash." And I liked the challenge of, once you've beaten all the dungeons, starting a new three-day cycle over again and trying to do as much as you can in that cycle: beating all four bosses, solving as many of those "personal" problems as possible, and beating the game. It's quite an involving challenge.
The games I thought were a little bit off were the Oracle games. Don't get me wrong, they were still fun, but one thing bothered me: The overall lay of the land in both Holodrum and Labrynna seemed...unnatural. It just seemed to go from one land type to another without any sensible transitions. Koholint, in Link's Awakening, actually seemed to make sense in how the geography was laid out. Oh, and there was no bow in the Oracle games. NO BOW! What kinda Zelda has no bow? Minor gripes, really, but they still bother me a little.

I hated the Zelda series pretty much. Legend of Zelda: sucked. Link's Awakening: sucked. Ocarina of Time: sucked. 4 Swords: Not bad.
But A Link to the Past is a different story. I actually bought it just to say I own it (and it was $3...) and started to play it and it's the game I'm currently playing.

Best series of games ever. There are games that are a lot more fun to play, but not nearly as gratifying as playing and beating the Zelda Series. The music, the gameplay, the writing, the stories, everything is on such a higher quality levels than the games that we're all use to (in general). The music is my favorite game soundtrack of all time. I thought the second installment had really fantastic music, but was OneUpped by Ocarina. Major's Mask was maybe not so much a re-hash of Ocarina, but a way of tiding Zelda enthusiasts over until the next installment. Which isn't the best practice, but was a great game nonetheless. It had some great music, some fantastic IDEAS - that crossed over into Wind Waker. Also, just because a game uses the same engine as it's predecessor doesn't mean it's a "cheap re-hash" even though it does save the company money. You wouldn't hear anyone crying if they had used the same engine for Zelda II, would you? The engine is very similar to that of Wind Waker anyways.
Oh yeah, I'm getting a Zelda-based Tattoo...

Right on, Woffester. Zelda II definitely had some awesome music.

Zelda has most the most consistently high quality titles of any game ever. Not one Zelda game in a cartridge sucked. WW was nice too. I'm one of the people who can truely see the art in the game. I'm also at the obsessed freak level since I took pictures of all the characters and had them made into little puppets... 8O  :? :|

Amen to that brother. I did love both the Zelda 64 games far more than any others, but I liked Majoras Mask better in the gameplay aspects, while I liked Ocarina better storyline wise and such. I think I may have actually liked Majora's Mask in the music aspect as well(Milk Bar, Rosa Sisters, Snowhead Temple, Clocktown, etc) I also liked the fact that the masks in Majora's Mask actually served a purpose besides making you look silly. The bunny hood was the bomb too, especially when you can fight demonic looking creatures wering bunny ears. :D
I got so sick of the original Zelda, I struggled with the first quest alot and when I got to the second one I just stopped. The music was very reptitive too and caused me to dislike the Legend of Zelda main theme for a long time.
Links Adventure was an extremley fun and challenging game that I have not beaten, I really to go buy it or something.
Links Awakening was one of the first RPG's I've ever played, it took me about 3 years to beat it the first time, now I could beat it in about 3 days. I have yet to play the other Gameboy Zeldas...
And Link to the Past, I never owned this one. But I did get to play it quite a bit, I just wish I would've been able to beat it.

Azar, I think you owe it to yourself to find a copy of Link to the Past that you can play (either GBA or SNES), and beat it. It probably doesn't cost much on SNES now.

Link to the Past was amazing. I remember waiting for that to come out at the local Blockbuster for rental, only to find that someone wasn't returning their copy of the game. That drove me nuts. I'd call in every couple of hours trying to find out if it was back in store yet. When I finally got to play the game... wow. Good times.
Zelda I & II were great, too.
The first Zelda for the N64 was awesome as well, but I was a little disapointed in how easy it was. I hated Majora's Mask and I'm not really sure why. For some reason, I remember feeling very restricted while playing it. Plus, I like the the adult Link from the first game and being stuck as the kid... Meh.

Zelda II: Link's Adventure on the NES.
That game I never finished, though I got up to the last or second to last temple, where you fight Link's clone. I never got past that.
Fun game though, good example of side-scrolling action RPG done right.
If there was anything that was hard about it, was restoring your hearts and getting life back. You had to have that cure spell, and magic on hand, otherwise you'd have to find a magic jar, and those things were rare.

Didn't you also get health back at level-up? Or am I just talkin' crazy?

...don't get me wrong. I'm not in the least bit saying that I like Zelda now. I still think the series sucks, but ALttP is pretty awesome...it's just that the rest sucks. Needed to clarify that.
EDIT: ...I think it sucks. My opinion.

Just because you deem it "sucks" doesn't make it so. Make sure to clarify that you do not like it, because millions of people around the world will attest to the fact that the Zelda series does not "suck". Then again, I'm talking to one of the dozens who enjoyed Legend of Dragoon...

KILLZ HIM!!!
I've actually never played any. Whaa.
I really should break out my Zelda: Special edition pack and get that goddamn Zedla II done with.
...
Does anyone notice that most Nintendo's mascots' second games are the freak of the series?
Mario Bros 2: Jump on baddie and throw them.
Zelda 2: RPG game
Kirby 2: Was a pinball game

Boy, that last one's a stretch.
It would be better to simply say that the second game of many series is the oddball. Take, for example, the NES/Famicom and PS1 trilogies of Final Fantasy. The middle (i.e. second) game in each of those two trilogies is definitely quite different from the others. I'm sure there's other possible examples...but it's late, and Ybrik needs sleep badly.

I forgot to ask earlier, but how much like the Legend of Zelda series is the Dark Cloud series, really?

Can't be that close together because I actually liked Dark Cloud. I should buy it again and beat it someday.
