View Full Version : Cartridges Obsolete? :O

With the release of every next generation system, will cartridges become obsolete?
Think about it, who of you here are excited about Nintendo's new Dual Screen portable?
We already know Sony's PSP will use discs, but will the DS follow suit? Will you still be able to play your GBA cartridges on the DS?
If you ask me, either way, the DS is going to have problems:
either it is simply not going to be backwards compatible with cartridges;
it is going to have dual-capability problems;
or it is simply still going to solely use the outdated, expensive cartridge technology.

umm...yes it is.

Then, it's going to have dual-compatiblity flaws isn't it? :/

explain what you mean by "dual-compatability flaws". Is that supposed to mean that it can't use cartridges and cd's at the same time?

Remember the PS2 and it's dual-compatibility flaws with both PSX discs AND PS2 discs when it first cam out?
Yes, THAT is what I am talking about.

And besides, the DS has two cartridge slots. One for GBA, and one for DS.
Unfortunately, it won't support GBC and earlier.

Thus the GBA will have the largest game library. Meh, the DS carts are even smaller than the GBA ones so I'm not complainin. Nintendo has never had backward compatibility flaws with it's handhelds and I doubt they ever will. Carts will remain on handhelds for a loong time though. They're much smaller than discs.

...I take it you haven't seen the tiny, itty-bitty PSP discs, yet...

Actually, that could prove to be a bit of a problem with some folks. I'm talking about the people who have trouble keeping track of their GBA carts. Me, I'm pretty sure I've never lost a game in my life...wait, that's not true...I've lost VERY FEW games in my life. But I know plenty of people that have.
Unfortunately, it won't support GBC and earlier.
err, where'd you hear that?

I can't name any one place that I've heard that, but I know I've heard it from multiple sources.

I've heard that it will support all previous GB carts.
I like cartidges more than cds, but that's just me.

The answer is no because the DS is not the next Gameboy. Nintendo already released that information.

The trouble with CDs is that the mechanism to use them is partly mechanical, whereas with a cartridge or some other media card it's entirely electronic. So...
1) Running a motor to spin a CD takes a lot more power in comparison than reading from a memory bank. So your battery runs down quicker and you need to charge it up sooner. (Sony told developers *not* to stream things off the CD in order to conserve battery power, which could mean more load times in games with big expansive levels and stuff.)
2) Mechanical parts are fragile. I know I've dropped my GBA and had it survive. I've also dropped CD players and had them break. A solid-state block of electronics is a lot more sturdy than a setup with a motor, gears, moving laser assembly, etc.
CD based media is a good thing because it's cheap to produce and it can store a lot of data. For handhelds, though, I think the new DS solution (memory sticks, much like the N-Gage uses) is the way to go. It would especially appeal to parents of kids who are more likely to handle the system pretty roughly, where durability is more of a factor.

Hrm....well, ok. But cartridges make emulation much easier for those who would rather not buy the games or systems. Have you seen any successful roms of Playstation or Gamecube games? Cartridges are becoming obsolete in once sense, but that doesn't mean they have to end. Some of the greatest games came from cartridges, and you can't scratch the bottom of a flat surface like you can with a CD. Heh, you can even throw them against flat surfaces, provided the cartridges don't shatter, and vent some fumes. Then again, I always hated blowing into the cartridge to get it to work.

The answer is no because the DS is not the next Gameboy. Nintendo already released that information.
The answer is you are wrong because Nintendo already confirmed that there will be TWO cartridge slots. One slot is for DS games, the other for GB games.
The information is at THIS LINK HERE (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/05/11/news_6097113.html?tag=gs_lnav_whatisds) and if you're too lazy to click there, here's a quote right from the article.
The system will be backward compatible with the Game Boy Advance (and, therefore, with other, earlier Game Boy models). The GBA cartridges fit in a slot in the front of the system, and the DS cartridges fit in the back. The DS cartridges will be noticeably smaller than the GBA carts, and while we weren't able to see one, they were described as being roughly the same size as a standard SD media card used for devices such as Pocket PCs and digital cameras.
Read up on things before you make some posts...

Actually, Cartredges may not yet be outdated. although they hold more on a disk, they cannot be writen, or hold a saved game. They may also make a special cartregde containing a disk inside.

The reason the DS will only support GBA games and not earlier is because the GBA had two processors, on to run GBA games, and one for GBC games. The DS will have two as well, not three. It will have a processor for gba games, and a processor for DS games.
Also, don't quote me on this, but I believe both processors will be used on DS games as well, for the two different screens.

KWarp, KWarp, KWarp!
That's all I see down "latest poster."
Let someone else take the spotlight for once, man!
You're running on about 5 posts on this board per day on average!
It's not like frequent posters get prizes or something!
This isn't a contest!
Unless you feel you have something to contribute, try restraining yourself from pressing that "submit" button!
I always have my opinions, but sometimes, you just don't NEED to express them.
(I wonder if this's one of those kinds of opinions that don't need to be expressed?)

Oh boy, another one of these guys. <(>_>)>
Long story short:
1) My post average on other boards is well over 20 a day
2) I have nothing better to do with my time
3) I adjust myself to the rules of the forums and most people here write sentences like that. Just look at the post above. If you want perfect structure and good discussion to the www.rarewitchproject.com forums.[/url]
