View Full Version : The most amazing thing about VGM is...

...The way that when you hear the OSV or any arrangements of a familiar theme from one of your favorite games, you suddenly want to play that game all over again to relive those memories. Just today that's happened for me with Donkey Kong Country, FFVII, Chrono Trigger, FFVIII and FFVI....and the day's still young.

Anyone else have any similar experiences? Or anyone want to share what their favorite thing about VGM is?

All must bow before Mitsuda and Chrono Trigger.

Earthbound rocks my world!!!(no pun intended...well, maybe.) I almost ALWAYS go back to a great game after hearing the music from it. In some ways, music MAKES the game!

Well, there was a time when I replayed the game Chrono Cross and then suddenly realized I had to have the complete soundtrack. As for games where I heard the music and had to replay the game, Earthbound and Donkey Kong Country 2 are definately two of them. They REALLY need a complete Earthbound soundtrack (I know, I can get the .spcs, but the Earthbound .spcs and many other Nintendo (not to mention Tecmo) .spcs don't work on Audio Overload, the only Mac program that handles these kinds of things.

Listening to VGM from the game gives you nostalgia about the game and pretty much forces you to go back and play it.

Listening to the Sonic remixes makes me want to re-live the game and original soundtrack all over again. The Doom remixes are makin me itch to play doom again, so that'll be quenched pretty soon.

Have you tried the SPCs from www.snesmusic.org rather than Zophar?

I'm probably the only one to answer "no" to this poll. When I listen to awe-inspiring music from games I have played, I certainly remember/relive the cool moments associated with the game & the song, but I never really feel like playing it over again. However, most of the music I listen to is not from a game I've played... so I definitely don't really feel like picking up the game again (since I never did in the first place, and because I have no idea if the game lives up to the music).

EDIT: Also, Henry, if the SPCs don't work for you it would be easy enough for me to convert the output of my SPCs into MP3/Ogg Vorbis/WAV/FLAC/whatever. Contact me, or I'll forget. =p

I'm replaying SotN right now because I didn't truly appreciate the genius of its music until recently. I could listen to Tragic Prince for hours.

I responded to this poll, but I don't think it's a particularly good one. A different poll with choices for how often people replay a game after hearing the music would be better.

Most of the time i have my stereo on while playing games.
I realy haven't came across a game that had music I didn't like.
I just like hearing something different every know and then instead of the same music repeating over and over.

I do a lot of RPG "viewing". I.E., I watch while Bryan plays RPGs. He's much faster at them than I am, and there's no frustration like I get when I play them myself.

I've watched through Chrono Trigger countless times, just for the music, and right now I'm dying for him to play Xenogears and Valkyrie Profile again, for the music.

I've started to play through games again many times after listening to their music. I don't always finish them again.

Hey, HillaryGayle...been a while since I've seen you around here. Nice new avatar, btw.

Yeah, well....the idea for the poll just popped into my mind right after I created the thread. Sorry if it's not perfect.

I wasn't trying to slam you.

From what I've seen of posters here, it seems most of us listen to video game music fairly often. If a person listens to VGM 200 times, and gets in the mood to replay one of those games just once, then the answer to the poll as written is yes. The current results confirm this (19 to 2). I was just commenting that I'm interested to see how often people do the "replay a game" thing when they listen to video game music.

Good point. Oh well. Maybe I'll change the poll if possible, maybe not. Probably, I won't really even bother. Too busy, too lazy, whatever. But your point is noted. And no hard feelings here.
