Whoop! Time for my reviews, since all in all there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of feedback for the project... that, and no one's commented on my tracks, so maybe if I start in with what I think others may follow. :)

Dale - Awesome work as always dude. It's pretty, and kickass at the same time. Excellent orchestration, the mixing and samples are top notch, and the beat manages to be very driving without overdoing it on the percussion. I also like the subtle weaving of synth bass amongst the orchestral sounds. Nice.

Dhsu - Dude, your piece made my jaw drop. Truly a chance to show off the piano chops, given the original, and you did an incredible job. The first time I heard this I was really digging the piano, the lonely interpretation of a classic melody, the lovely parallel octaves in the melody there, and then... the ORGAN. HOT. I love it. Mustin, did you have something to do with that? I remember the original being a Midi or something... either way, it's awesome. Chill-inducing.

Diggi Dis - Alright, so let me explain how powerful that bass is. I live in a condo; I have neighbors. On the rare occasion that I'm cranking my music ridiculously loud too late at night, they'll politely bang on my wall and ask my to turn it down. Now - YOUR song, I play at a decent hour, at a decent volume... and they bang on my wall. Your bass just cuts through the walls and shakes the whole condo dude. I dig it. That, and I really enjoy the whole mix, the sound clips, the piercing leads... nice work.

Ktriton - Wonderful work. It's one of those pieces that really transports me somewhere when I listen to it. And I love the fusion. Piano, electronics, orchestral elements, synthy goodness... very cool. Unfortunately I'm not terribly familiar with the original, but what you have hear couild easily hold it's own in a new soundtrack, be in for game or movie.

Mazedude - Dude, scary stuff! Is it true that the God of War remix gave your fiancee nightmares? Through the headphones? That's awesome!

Mustin - Similar to ktriton, you have some incredible fusion going on, and I love fusion. You weren't kidding when you said your mix would be worth the wait. I've had this come on in my playlist and make me drop what I was doing and be all like "hold up, what is this coolness? Oh right, it's Mustin's mix. Of course." I love the chunky distortion, the fast pace, the bass, the deceptively serene piano throughout, the screaming leads and guitar that come in at just the right places... just awesome.

po! - I admit, I had mixed feelings about your piece the first time I heard it, but it really grew on me. I get a kick out of the subtle River City Robot references mingled throughout. The comination of sax and guitar playing off eachother, and then together, was just downright inspired. Love it.

Zyko - Man, I just looove how weird these tracks are. On one hand I feel like I'm listening to several songs at once, on the other they stand alone as epic pieces with a story to tell. Your guitar work is stellar, the effects are delicious, and the mixes are full of surprises. I can tell you had a hell of a lot of fun making these, and I had just as much fun listening to them. Keep up the insanity bro.

You left out Bladiator, bro!

Mazedude
10-31-2006, 04:34 PM
Whoa, how'd that happen?

Bladiator - I dig the mellow Latin vibe dude. It definitely stands out as a unique part of the album. The piano playing is beautiful, the flute is quite nice, the strings compliment things very well, and when things get kicked up a notch ya do a good job of keeping it balanced and quick at the same time, without letting things get out of hand. Nice tunage.

Just one.

The one.

Now, back to the topic - Bad Dudes, or other such remix projects. I had an idea in mind for a project called "Obscure Favorites," where we could mix our favorite songs from games that we secretly believe no one else has ever played, yet we still liked for some reason.

Any other crazy ideas out there? Thoughts?

Dhsu
11-02-2006, 12:35 PM
I secretly want to do a project for the Super Robot Wars (http://snesmusic.org/v2/profile.php?profile=set&selected=14194) series, but I don't think I'll ever have the time for it. Also, I think most of the songs are licensed, so it'd be like remixing remixes.

My next idea was to have a Yoko Kanno tribute project, for music from both her anime and VG work. Everything would be fair game, from Uncharted Waters 2 and Napple Tale, to Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne. It would be even cooler if we could get some A-M-V.org people to join in.

Probably the most mainstream idea I had was a Guilty Gear project. Not enough coverage of that series at all. :(

My last idea isn't VG related, and will probably end up being a personal project...a Shiina Ringo tribute. But that's a long, long ways away...

I think I might be a little late in saying this, seeing as how it's been almost a month sense the last post here. However, I feel this needs to be said.

I think this album isn't getting the attention it deserves, and I don't think the problem has to do with people not wanting to donate. In Mustin's writeup for the Bad Dudes EP, he mentions that the download link is on the page, regardless of whether or not you donate. However, the link is almost invisible, and I wouldn't be surprised if many people are unable to find it at all.

Now, granted, if you donate, you will be instantly allowed to download the album. Here's the problem: you never said that the download would be initiated when you donate. Now, suppose a person interested in downloading the album is unable to find the download link. As far as this person knows, the donate links are just for donation and don't start the download.

I think that people who may want to pay for the album, can't find the download link and assume that their payment will be in vain.

Considering the high quality of the music on this album, I think that sucks in a big way. I think the download page needs to mention that donation will grant access to the album, or better yet, make the free download button easier to see. I believe that once people are sure that they can get the music, you may also start to see something in the way of donations.

Sorry for the double post, but this is a completely different topic and I didn't want to mix them up.

I can't believe how little attention Mazedude's "Minotaur Nightmares" track is getting. Besides about two mentions on the Bad Dudes EP thread on OCR, nobody has even mentioned the track besides Mazedude himself! I have been a big fan of Mazedude's game arrangements, particularly his Doom II mixes and the American Album. "Minotaur Nightmares" easily matches, if not surpasses, the quality of the aforementioned tracks.

Starts off with an ominous vibe, but quickly picks up the pace. Excellent samples here. I love the industrial sounding beat, and the awesome monster shrieks. Somehow manages to be both in-your-face enough to inspire claustrophobia, and expansive enough to make you feel like tiny and insignificant, truly great. I have played "God of War" and am familiar with the source material. I never would have imagined that somebody could arrange this track at all, much less do this good of a job! I think this may be my new favorite track from you. Keep up the good work!

Mustin

I wanted to address your post. I see what you're saying, but let me explain.

People don't seem to want to pay for music anymore. Especially in this community. This community is here because people enjoy remaking video game music and sharing it with other people who enjoy video game music. No money changes hands, and, despite the fact that it is illegal, there's nothing really wrong with that. So my problem has been that I'm bothered by the fact that most people don't want to pay for any music - whether it is licensed or not. This is why the page is made to look like a donation of $5 is required in order to download the .ZIP file.

I still made it so that anyone could download it for free. Because it is illegal, as I mentioned. But since there's so much awesome free music floating around in this community, people would just rather not play into my joke and see that there is a free download link hidden in there. This started with the Club Game Music (http://www.oneupstudios.com/CGM) project where we just stopped caring. Yeah, you can download it for free, but we'd sure like to have your five dollars so that at some point, maybe we can cop a free dinner for all of our hard work. It's not like we're money grubbing jerk offs - it's just that sometimes it's nice to know that people appreciate what you do.

So, whenever my redesigns are done, I'll have these free EPs up for download and it'll be a whole lot less confusing, and probably a little less funny (sadly). Because yeah, we didn't even get enough donations from this project to give everyone who made music $5. Bummer.

Thanks for your concern, and even more so - thanks for saying something! It's probably been a mix of 1.) people not wanting to download the album because they think they have to pay and 2.) people just hating me for always trying to get money - that has kept people from even talking about the music. Luckily, one friend of mine sent me an eMail saying he liked my track. That was nice. Otherwise, I don't think anyone else even heard it! HA!

And yeah, Mazedude kicks some serious ass. This "Minotaur Nightmares" is definitely one of his best ever.

(Hey, Mazedude, did you submit this to OCR yet?)

Dhsu
11-27-2006, 02:54 PM
Wait, we can submit these to OCR?

O SNAP, I need to get on that.

I didn't get this stuff until today. I didn't even realize that I could have gotten them for free, not that that would have made a difference. However, I still was a little confused after I made my donation, worrying that I might not be able to get the tracks...until I used my head and clicked on return to merchant.

Great stuff all around. I especially love Dale's track (I've been wanting an arranged version of this track for sooooo long, so thank you, Dale), Mustin's track (Decisive Battle is such great source music that almost every arrangement I've ever heard of it is good, but this is probably top two or three in that regard), and Dhsu's track (a new favorite of mine).

Hello again.

I've been thinking over this situation and I would like to know what you think about this:

I think people would be interested in hearing this album of music, regardless of the politics you mentioned. I am interested in creating a new thread regarding the Bad Dudes EP on OCR (the original thread was deleted) consisting of the following:

-Thread title: Boss and Battle Music Arrangement Collaboration Available
I am intentionally not mentioning the name "Bad Dudes", because I think it threw a lot of people off in the original thread. Although my title is considerably less catchy...

-Explanation of how donations work, and where to find the free download.
Ok, this is why I am asking for your permission in the first place. I wanted to know if I could include instructions on how to find the free download link. If you aren't ok with me doing this, I could at least mention that the download will initiate after the donation is sent.

EDIT: Even if I explain the free download link, I will strongly recommend that people donate if they liked the music.

If you are ok with this idea, I could run a draft by you guys when I finish it.

Sorry if I am running this into the ground, but I really don't want this EP to be doomed to obscurity.
