View Full Version : And I'm done! (The OUS end-of-semester topic)

I'm done with the hardest semester yet (next semester might be harder, but I sincerely doubt it). I was finished with my finals on Tuesday, so I've been done for a couple of days, but meh. All I care about is that the main source of stress in my life is gone! Sure, I still have other problems, but they're not pressing or immediate. No more class-related stress until September! Hell yeah!

I think everyone else that's in school should post here when they're done. We should all celebrate together. *Opens a bottle of wine...I'm thinking some Chianti would be nice* And get your own. This bottle's mine!

And yes, I'm taking my self-imposed one post a day limit off of myself. I no longer have the stress putting me on edge.

Generally speaking, I'd say it's more fun, but I think it's also more stressful.

College ---

Is not as fun as high school. Way too much work and responsibility. Unless you go into a stupid/easy major. Otherwise- I'd go back to the fun and ease of high school in a heartbeat. except for the whole living with the parents thing -- that sucked. Enjoy it while it lasts!!

Does the same apply if I'm attending junior college first? Is it more stressful as far as work goes or other stuff like money?

Would you consider "Writing" an easy major? I'm trying to avoid to much math or science, since I suck with both of them. I'm going to minor in music, since I'm okay with that, even though it is both a math and a science. Living with parents isnt that bad, my dad actually says as long as I live at home he'll pay my car insurance, I guess being a good kid pays off. I guess I'll enjoy my next two weeks of school...

BTW, what is/was your major? Is it hard?

College is cool, just not MY college.

Hence my relocation plans.

I dont actually live in New Jersey, never the less the school I wanted to go to is in your state, in Boston actually, but out of state fee's are crazy, so I'm starting at Junior college and then transfering upstate. It's cheaper that way, right?

I'm guessing Lee is a rather rual area or something, why is it not cool?

Well, I didn't go to college in Lee, because there are no colleges in Lee--I went to Albany, NY for school. And it sucked. No people, no fun, etc.And their Illustration department was for shit, too.

What school are you planning on? UMass Boston?

Writing - in some forms, would be right in the middle -- difficult to do well, but you can probably keep up some pretty damn good grades without a giving up life and limb. I'm a microbiology major with a minor in the history of medicine. It's a huge struggle pretty much every other week for four years. Money is tough - but I work a lot and I have great parental support so that part's not so bad. The shitty thing is living with other people when you just want to have your space, or having to do the dishes and clean absolutely everything even when you really just want to get your other work done. Those kinds of chores and responsibilities cut into the day if you're used to sharing them with your family, or like me, with your housecleaner (hehe). It was hard going out of my way to get milk when I was exausted from a long day of class, homework, work issues, ect. But it just wasn't going to show up in my fridge the next morning.

I would recomend doing some community college work. No shame, only money saved there. It's a gentler transition - they have actually helpful staff for the most part - at a big university, you are left to be resourceful with what you need - a little help from a school would have been nice. Also, I've changed my mind about exactly what i'm majoring in (although the direction is primarily the same) and it would have been nice to try stuff out in a community college before it really counts here. Downside is that it is difficult to meet/socialize with people at a large university if you're not there and in the dorms your freshman year. As much as that kind of life sucks - you should probably do it if you're gonna need some friends around for the next four years. I've found it a little lonely when I really stopped hanging out with those dorm-mates. Smaller schools don't have that problem, but then there is also no life outside of college events. The town you're in should be a place you can stand, live in, and work in. Otherwise you're really gonna be lacking. A good school in a shit town doesn't make for a good experience (or so i've gathered). Thats my general advice. You're gonna have to do what works for you, but I've seen many freshman, including myself, feel disillusioned by how different it is from the photos and the movies. You have to really want to be in school to stay in a challenging program. Good luck with that --

Shonen - Sorry to hear all that. I guess Lee was pretty rual. I had wanted to go to "The Boston School of Broadcasting", because my sophmore year I was on honor roll, and with the exception of my algebra grades, I had above B's. So I had figured it shouldnt be too hard to make it in. My junior year that changed and the realization set in that of money not only is college alot, but out of state will rob you blind. So I gave up on that, and instead am planning on transfering to UNC Chapel Hill, it's an hour and a half from where I am (East NC). I only wish I still lived in one of the places I used to (New York, Virginia, Floridia, California, Pennsylvania, etc..) because they were at acess to much better schools in state, some of which may not have been as hard to get to as the ones down here, but I guess that's the problem with having a father in the military, you have to move all the friggin time!

Erin - microbiology...now I see why college is not as fun as high school, that's a serious major. Same for the medicine minor...I guess it would be better off to do two years at a junior college, it might be less of a struggle considering all I make is minimum wage(5.45/hr). I actually do alot of the chore stuff now, but with studying and all that I can see how it will be harder once I actually leave, and I dont know how much support I'll have with money. Scholarships are difficult, I cant seem to get any financial aid, and my last attempt will be a loan, and hopefully that will get me through the first two years. I understand about meeting people and all but in all honesty I'm usually extremley shy in person and to top that off have low self esteem so I probably wont do a whole lot of socializing anyway...more power to you for starting at the university, few people I know actually have that privilage right after high school(at least at my school). I actually really want to get a education, but I plan on doing other stuff on the side to make up for the social life that I may lose...hopefully that will be a good enough compensation.

I would go the easy way like some of my friends and join the military(it's what makes our city/town what it is) but I'd have to cut my hair, and I just cant do that. :D

I think I really chose well when picking a university to attend. My recent problems notwithstanding (and they're mostly due to personal reasons of mine, not problems with the school), I've had a pretty damn good time at TCU. My major (news-editorial journalism) isn't too tough most of the time--although this semester was a bit of a doozy, with the reporting class and all--I make some good extra money doing something that I like in my future work field (copy editing), I don't have to worry about paying for anything, since my scholarships pay for most of my expenses and my parents pay for the rest, and my school isn't either too large or too small to feel like I have some sort of a place here. Our student body is approximately 8,000 students, but due to the number of students not really involved with much of anything, it feels more like 500-1,000. Everyone that's involved in anything (I'm involved in the band program and student publications) seems to know everyone else, or can be traced back to someone else that knows them...Six Degrees of Horned Frogs, if you will. So anyway, I don't feel overwhelmed or lost in the crowd like lots of people do in college...but that's probably due to being at a private school. At any rate, the experience is probably different for everyone.

I could swear I was going somewhere with this post, but...meh.

my semester isn't quite over just yet. i still have next week, and maybe the week after to deal with.

i attend a community college here in illinios, so its not too much of a urden, dealing with classes and people.

i also work in the school as a student aid in the copy cnter, which is more fun thaan you'd think.

the semester was prett easy for me, since i am only taking one math class. but i won't get too much of a est bewteen semesters, what with work, and also taking a class during the summer.

on a side note, i make just over minimum wage (6.90/hr), which has gone to buying mny movies, and buyng a nice computer that nearly drove me cray building the damn thing, and im stillnot done yet. just a soundcard to buy, and it will be complete.

heh, $6.90 is starting pay at my school, for level 3 jobs that is.

they have a rather interesting way of approaching wages. every student job is different, and as such, they use a "wage level" system.

level 1 is 6.25, level 2 is like 6.50 or so, level 3 is 6.90 (my job level), all the way up to 8.25 at level 6.

as i understand it, staff positions start at level 7, and goto level 9 or 10, i think.

its made me feel as if im a character in FF8 at times, but SeeD level has nothing to do with it. nor do we train in the use of gunblades, but i think that we do have a fencing team hidden somewhere.

This semester was not really bad. My grades were nowhere near as good as the last, but they were not too terrible. I do have to take summer sessions due to ONE course I took this semester and bombed the final in. Sucks...but hey, much better than if I had to be a super senior because of screwing up ALL my classes.

Well, as Previously stated, I failed 20th Century Anglo-American Philosophy (I'm pretty sure about it). The people who think Philosophy is easy need to be introduced to 300-400 level Philosophy. You have to make arguments over material you can't even understand! But then again, Philosophy works differently than my mind. I take the complicated and make it simple, they take the simple and make it complicated. Trying to work the opposite way you think is extremely difficult. And if you can't properly argue, you get NO points. Not even points for trying. Oh well. I ALWAYS have back-up plans.

As for the rest, probably a D in Cognitive Psychology because I was suffering severe insomnia and kept missing class. An A or a B in Field Production. I did everything that was asked of me and was there every damn day. I'd better get an A. My 20th Century American Literature class will probably be a B. The professor gives EVERYONE a B. My Magazine Production grade could be all over the place depending how kind my professor is to my research paper.

I did get to watch some interesting projects for field production. One was a melodramatic thriller parody.

"I'm pregnant and you're the father!"
"But we never slept together!"
"Don't get caught up in the details!"

"I think I know who keyed my car and killed [his Chia Pet](Cut to shot of "I Love You-Sarah" keyed on his car). But we have no evidence! (Cut to guy's roommate saying, "Hey, Sarah! What are you doing to Steve's car?") They'll never buy our story (cut to roommate again, "Hey, Sarah, what are you doing with Steve's housekey?").

Well, it seems that my hard work all semester paid off in one regard: Unless I don't get an A in symphonic band (yeah right, come on), I'll have a 4.0 for the semester, something I haven't managed before in college. That bumps my overall GPA up to about a 3.57, which gives me a lot of cushion if I fuck something up next semester. So at least I have SOMETHING to be happy about lately!

Where I go to college, it's like fucking summer camp...except, it would be a more accurate analogy to compare it to a prison camp.

I really am the hated and feared Gendo Ikari...I get attacked and harassed in public, AND in the dorms. Problem is, none of said people know me and I don't know them...they're just being assholes, like inmates in a prison. The police can't do anything about it unless I can tell them who the people are. I especially run into trouble in the showers...

Because I have THAT riding on my back, I really am not able to study well...but I can't switch colleges, because all of the credits I have accumulated won't transfer to other colleges...I'd have to start all over again. I'm going into my second year, but I've already taken three semesters of courses. Lord knows I don't want to start all over again...

Oh yes, and high school sucked just as bad...at least I could go home to my own house and not be harassed there by anyone...except my parents...can't really tell you who's more grating; my parents or the inmates...

God, I need to get a job this Summer...my world is painted black...so, so, black...

Definitely more stressful. No doubt that it is more fun though. When it comes to crunch time however, it's crunch time. This semester for me was riddled with more class related stress than the social related stress of the first semester. It was also a lot more dull. Overall? Meh, 3.3-3.5 GPA, good enough for me.

My "semester" has to be vicariously through Bryan. He got all As and one B, with minimal stress. Next semester is his student teaching. I'd say it all went rather well.

I miss college. I really liked it. I knew exactly what was expected of me and did it, using my l33t organizational skills to...hopefully...never forget things. ^________^ Sometimes it didn't work, but hey. I tried. I miss it. *sigh*

I love college for like 3 reasons:

1.) I don't have to come up a lame ass excuse to cut class.
2.) The females are far attractive than they were in high school.
3.) Drinking + Fraternity Brothers + Attractive women (physically AND their personalities) = Not a lot of stress.

add those three reasons up, and you'll see why college is fun for me.

That's the damned truth.

I managed to avoid the extra weight. You've all heard of the "Freshman 15"? Yeah, my first semester I lost 15 lbs, putting me down to about 175. Marching Band + walking to all my classes + figuring out my own eating schedule = me losing some weight. Now I've gained some back and am aroun 185 or 190 now (I haven't weighed myself in a while). So I'm still a little on the skinny side for a guy who's 6'7".

I put on weight - a lot of it - my freshman year. I was working out (hard) every single day that I wasn't with Mustin from Jan 03-May03. Didn't drop an ounce. It's all the buffet caf. food. Since I've been living on my own and able to shop for my own proper food, and drinking less, I've been losing it. I've been dropping it slowly ever since. Now I weigh about what I did senior year, and my body is shaped better. My growing breasts added some weight, so I had to account for that. (hehe). Many people are still gaining the weight - but I'm more tone than before - so it works for me.

Do Japanese people freak out at the sight of tall people or Americans?

Both, I'm told by friends there. The average Japanese man is about my height or thereabouts (I'm 5'5"), so anyone taller than 6'0" is amazingly tall. Anyone 6'7" would be a conversation piece, I'm afraid.

As for the American thing, they tend to really gawk at people who are very exotic looking to them. Blondes, redheads, black people, and people with curly or wavy hair really get a lot of looks. One friend of mine who lives over there has ringlets, and small children are always wanting to pull on them to watch them spring back. Of course, this doesn't happen OFTEN in public, with the parents drilling Japanese politeness into them, but every now & then she says she gets a free-spirited little girl or guy pointing & exclaiming over her hair.

I'm a redhead, so I'm told I'd get a lot of male attention. A redheaded Canadian friend of mine who went to Kyoto said that guy friends told her she looked like an anime character because of her hair.

*thinks*

Am I the ONLY one of my friends who's never been to Japan? < /despair>

My god, this semester was the worst yet, but also the best in my mind.

I started out with 14 hours.

CSC 425 - SQL Server 2000 class with optional Microsoft Certification exam. A
CSC 481 - Final computer science class ever. Had to design a screen saver that would periodically pull news stories off of a database. Built a secure website where you could login, enter in news stories, edit them, and manage users. And built the database with it. Then we got to demo it in front of every major IT department head in the tristate area. Lots of fun. A in it as well
Physics II - Easy class, didn't have to show up for it. Extreme minimal effort and a C or D in it. Which doesn't matter
Physics II Lab - Easy class. Easy A
ISDS 150 - Intro to computing. OMG, Office 2002 is just so hard to use. Easy A.

Now, in CSC 481, I put 260 hours outside of class into my group project over a 3 month period. In CSC 425, I put in over 120 hours doing a database implentation project and studying for the Microsoft Certification exam. Which I got, by the way. I'm now a Microsoft Certified Professional in SQL Server 2000.

Then 2 months ago, I got an internship with the school board's tech department. Enterprise level environment, 6000+ computers. We go and fix every little problem. I work there 20 hours a week. Then on the weekends I worked 16-20 hours at my part time job at a grocery store. My schedule for the past two months has looked like this.

Sunday - 6 a.m. - 3 p.m. working at grocery store. Then go home and work on CSC 481 project
Monday - 7 a.m. - noon. working at school board. Go to class for 2 hours. Work on CSC 481/425 projects
Tuesday - 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. classes
Wednesday - same as Monday
Thursday - same as Tuesday
Friday - 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. school board, go home and either go to work at grocery store until midnight or work on CSC 481 project
Saturday - Same as Sunday

If you'll notice, there are no days off anywhere in there. I haven't had a single day off from work/school since March 12. I haven't gotten more than 5 hours of sleep since then as well. And I couldn't be happier or more energetic. For the past 3 weeks, I've been done with my CSC stuff, so I've been spending every waking free moment with my newfound love in life, Stacie.

Starting next week, I will be working 40 hours a week for the school board, 7-4 Monday - Friday. And working 6-3 on Saturdays and Sundays at Krogers. Then in two weeks, I'll have a night economics class on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays that will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. So I'll be working 56 hours a week, and going to school 12 hours a week. Fun, fun, fun.

I don't want to hear any complaining from any of you about how hard this semester was. I guarantee you, I had a worse one.

Hopefully you guys are done growing, as well. I don't want to be 6'8", as this seems to be a good place to stop.

Looks like I'll have fun in Japan if I ever visit. Go there, live in a tube, whatnot :)

Let's ALL go. We'll gather up a group of the most non-Japanese looking people, and all go & tour Japan together. We'll make the national news. ^_^

Yeah, with our nation's foreign policy right now, they'd probably think we were going to war with them....then put us in jail

Why, we'll just use our trusty Rust Promoters and we'll be fine.

Whoops, too much Earthbound lately.

Ah yes...leaving high school was very much a bittersweet experience for me. So many friends left behind (although the closest ones I still keep contact with during the school year and often do stuff with them whenever they're here), so many memories and comfortable surroundings to say goodbye to (most of my friends and I practically lived in the band hall and the accompanying areas)...

But so much potentially good change ahead. Not until I left high school and moved on to college did I find what I really want to do when (if) I grow up (editing). And although many of my friends from high school I haven't seen or talked to in ages (the Keller High School section of my AIM buddy list just...sits there, no communication with those people despite the ease of the Internet), I have gained just as many if not more friends through my involvement with band and, more importantly, the newspaper, at TCU.

So yeah, you should be happy...it is a bit of an accomplishment, after all, but it's all right to feel kinda melancholy about it too.

Fuck it. Too many people say the last 12 years went by in a flash. They become worried because of their apprehension about the end of school, which is contrary to their past excitement on this occasion.

Fuck it. Look at the seconds on your clock -- we lived each second of our lives to arrive this point, and shall forge ahead. The last 12 years were truly years, excruciating and full. The human body is not capable, even instinctually, of measuring such a long, invented period of time.

We are the same people as we were yesterday and shall be tomorrow. Graduation changes nothing. Let us be joyous.

I'm finally done with my semester. ::Sigh of relief:: Come this fall I'm also transfering to UCLA and I'll finally be living away from home. Out with the old, in the new.

Now I'll celebrate by listening to festive gaming music and pouring a can of coke over myself.

Okay...riiiiiight....

I think I'd rather just drink the Coke. With some Crown Royal. Which I believe is exactly what I did when my semester was done.

Heh, the only way you can get me to drink coke is when there's some alcohol mixed in it.

I hate soda stomach.

High School is teh $uX0r (and the grades before it). Here is why:

1. Long hours and no pay.
2. Having to learn subjects you don't need to know if you know what you are going to major in college.
3. Lots of stupid people everywhere.
4. Crappy sports games
5. Mindless wreckless drivers everywhere.
6. Seniors jack up stuff with tissue, paint and shaving cream
7. Terrible lunch food and no way to avoid except for bringing a lunch which will be cold by the time you eat it.

I was very happy when I graduated and didn't even look back at the high school since. Lets see what memories I'm suppose to have:

1. Prom (to much hype for how lame it was [riding in a limo doesn't add any effect to a formal dance])
2. Graduation (long and boring)

I guess that's it. Yahh for post graduation to get out of this place FOREVER!!!!! 8) 8) 8)

1. Long hours and no pay. - Point.
2. Having to learn subjects you don't need to know if you know what you are going to major in college. - That's why you need to sleep in class dude.
3. Lots of stupid people everywhere. - I was one of them, what of it?
4. Crappy sports games - Those are everywhere yo...
5. Mindless wreckless drivers everywhere. - And that just applies to high school?
6. Seniors jack up stuff with tissue, paint and shaving cream - Not us, the privlages of Seniors kept getting taken and then when we became Seniors, we had none. Personally I think they should have allowed Tar and Feathers at least...
7. Terrible lunch food and no way to avoid except for bringing a lunch which will be cold by the time you eat it. - It beats the hell out of finding hair in your food, who needs a hot meal anyway?

1. Prom (to much hype for how lame it was [riding in a limo doesn't add any effect to a formal dance]) - Yes it was overated, but I took my hot phillapino cheerleader friend, so it kicked ass!
2. Graduation (long and boring) - I dont know about long, but it sure as hell was boring. It was interesting seeing everybody do their vicotry dance or whatever after receiving their "diploma".

If there is anything to learn, I guess it's high school dosent mean a damn thing, what a waste of four years, eh?

Ace!

Hardly. Hopefully High School inadvertantely taught you the social skills you will need as an adult.

Last night was the eighth grade promotion for the students I have been working with for the last two years. I have been there to watch them go through the entire middle school program (seventh and eighth grade in a K-12), and last night was the end of it all.

I never could have guessed that when I recieved my placement last year, a simple thirty hour requirement for an Introduction to Education class, that I would find myself sticking around for two whole years. I kept being invited back, kept working with these amazing kids, kept coming up with ideas that were accepted and allowed to create some innovative, if not always successful, elective courses.

And last night I was asked to stand on stage with the real teachers, handing out diplomas. I got a lot of hugs, and heard a lot of "I'll miss you"s. It's just now hitting me that it's over. Another chapter in my life has come to a close.

These guys are gone, they have stepped up, achieved and will continue to do so wherever it is they are going. And I'll miss them.

My first class... and I'm not even a real teacher yet. This is what I have to look forward to. This is what makes it all worthwhile. To know that I had an impact.

This semester was supposed to be my semester off before I head back for twelve straight months of school. And I ended up working harder than I have in quite some time. But it was all worth it.
