Without bias, what do you think is the best video game music tribute band?

I put each site up in order of the poll so you can check them all out. Give it some time and cast a vote.

My choice is Neskvartetten hands down. I just love them. They really are the best.

too bad the neskvartetten stuff is down. out of the ones i've heard on that list, they're my favorite. we'll see about 'select start' and 'the advantage' though

If I didnt pick the OneUp Mushrooms, I'd pick Neskimos. The rest I havent heard enough from. The only thing I heard from neskvartetten was a couple of renditions of the Zelda theme, which I'm not to nuts about. I really like Neskimos though, even though most of their stuff is like hard rock I think it's cool, and they did alot of stuff...

I can't reallly pick a fave out of the ones I've listened to. I mean, OUM is Swing Music, NESkimoes does Rock remixes (and is a local band) and Game Over does Rock/Vocal covers (I even have their sampler CD).

Out of those, I'd have to say OUM because Rock is good, but does not hold a candle to Swing.

I'd DL and listen to song from the other bands that were mentioned, but this computer is slow and would die if I tried and I found out that I can't put a 56K modem on it...

Neskvartetten is probably the most creative, I'd say...OneUp Mushrooms are the most talented...Minibosses are the most kick-ass. It's like trying to compare Prince to Michael Jackson...You'll have your people who will say one is better than the other, but really they're both in a league of their own and are awesome in their own respective ways that you can't really label one as the "best."

Edit*** You forgot "Everyone." If they were included I would say that they are the best.

I'll stick with the Musrooms quite honestly because I love a jazzy beat. the Sax and Trumpet are among my favorite instruments!

Unbiased, Minibosses.
Yeah, so far I'm the only guy to vote them and I know I'm OUS's biggest fan, but the Mushrooms haven't had a chance to prove themselves yet.
Once the Shrooms have more than a song here and there on a CD and have a definite lineup and some history to them, they are a contender...
But if we go ORIGINAL Shrooms lineup vs. Bosses... I'll take Shrooms. Come on... Dave's hat was the greatest...and Mustin not on bass? That just doesnt seem right...
But yeah...two MAGFests in a row say Minibosses in my mind...
But what about Crazy Crakaz? HAHAHAHAHA!!!

EDIT:

Can someone hook me up with CDs of music from the NESkimos, Select Start and Neskvartetten? I havne't heard their music... and Rush, can you hook me up with a copy of that Game Over disc.

ONLY 2 PEOPLE voted for the Minibosses?

Man, they'd get my vote off of Nostalgia alone. Their Castlevania medley was the first VG song I EVER downloaded.

BUT HEY GUESS WHAT THAT'S WHAT THEY USE

i'm not impressed by the minibosses... really at all. This is not to say that i could do it any better, but i have heard people who have. i think their popularity is because they're sort of the most visible. They're pretty awesome guys, from being around them at magfest 1 & 2, but their music is not really all that super awesome.

Press play on tape is also pretty good I think. Linkage (http://www.pressplayontape.com)

Though I'd have to go for Neskvartetten on this one. Their overall production quality is best imho. (Except for a few Mushroom tracks).

How about these guys?
Grospixels- A french band http://www.grospixels.com/site/remix.html

Metroid Metal- www.metroidmetal.com

Megadriver- A Brazilian metal band

Anyway, I voted for the Mushrooms. Much love for vg music. :)

I don't count one person with a computer as a band. Which is why I didn't pick some of those.

Everyone is sort of a band, but with two computers, both of which are playing typing keyboards(?), and a guitar - I don't get it.

Honestly. Neskvartetten may be very talented, but it's elevator music. I can handle only so much musician improvisation before the thing loses coherence. Maybe it's a thing only other musicians can appreciate, I dunno. I like OUM--much more structured and just as (if not more) talented.

I voted for the 'Bosses, just because of their phenominal live show. Honestly, they've got so much energy and drive that I couldn't not vote for them.

Though me thinks that if Mustin and company would get their asses in gear and release a CD I might change me tune.

Man, they'd get my vote off of Nostalgia alone.

And herein lies my beef with The Minibosses. Those songs we downloaded say 5+ years ago are still the only songs in their repetoir. Those 8-10 songs/medleys they have are really kickass, and a kickass concert to boot, but it's still those 8-10 songs.

Yeah, you're right. Megadriver is a band though and they do some nice renditions. I do like the Minibosses' grunge style. How about putting up the Black Mages? =)

I loved the mages...can't wait for the second album...

Mustin
05-31-2004, 10:41 PM
Black Mages were the same thing.

If they released a concert performance, on the other hand, that would be something.

Otherwise, nothing was real on that album except for the guitars. Bass was fake, drums were fake, and the keyboards were synth.

If you look at Mega Driver, they're the same thing. Keyboards and one guitar overdubbing.

Yeah, me too. I loved the first album to death.

That said, I voted for the Mushrooms, and would have no matter who else was on the list, because I like everything I've heard from them so far, something that I can't say for any other VGM band that I've heard.

OUM are so far my favorite cause of the jazzy styles, BUT I was a Neskimos fan first and I love all the hard rock tunes as well. Either way they are both super awesoma.

Game Over is my favorite VG band, the 'shrooms are a close second. I liked the Minibosses...4 years ago, when I didn't know(or had) any better. :P They are the bottom of the video game band totem pole nowadays IMO.

I checked out some of the downloads from each of the bands, and I can honestly say I enjoyed each of them quite a bit. (My only qualification would be that from what I heard of The Advantage, they may be sticking a little too close to the original songs for my tastes.) Having to choose only one, I voted for "Select Start" because:

1. They had a unique sound, and I really got a kick out of it.

2. No one else had voted for them.

3. They had "Kraid's Hideout" and "Bubble Bobble"!

With their recent release on OCReMix, it just reminds me of how awesome these guys are.

Check it out if you haven't heard it.

I don't see 'em listed and I have yet to see all four members play live, but Wave Theory is hands-down my favorite purely electronic vg tribute band today.

Why not bring this poll to MAGfest? There are enough bands playing to have a hellacious battle=

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but The Advantage and Select Start's webpages scare me.

As for my favorite band, I'd have to go with the NESkimos. You can tell from the way they play that they have a passion doing it, and you can tell they enjoy it.

I'd actually forgotten about Neskvartetten until I heard their new song on OCR. I'm gonna have to listen to some more of their stuff. It's very good.

You know, I find it rather sad, actually VERY VERY sad that nobody here in the last three pages has brought up the greatest VG Band ever....FANATICS TOWER OF POWER!!!!!!

You should all be ashamed!!! :x

I'm going to run for my life now....

I used to like you Azar, but Fanatics Tower of Power were the biggest fucking piece of shit "band" ever. They didn't even care about making a good song. They just cared about being assholes who made a mockery of video game remixes.
Shit, even *I* care about making something sound halfway decent...

Dang...I thought they were just trying to be funny, you know just making a joke and stuff...but they were joking ON vg remixs? How dare they...

It's obvious you do care about making something halfway decent, your stuff is presentable, there's although somewhat humorous, is not. The song's sound like they made them with a tape recorder.

I laughed when they started off with "Sudden Loss." I just find it funny that the song is one of the most covered in the game, yet there are probably ten people that have actually gotten to the part where it plays, and most of them cheated. Anyway, thanks for the heads up. That was nice, especially the boss theme.
