Got it this afternoon. Love the packaging! Certainly didn't expect it to come with such a rad poster. I'm totally diggin the art on the poster and the cd. My only complaint is that the plastic that keeps the disc in place broke during shipping, so my copy isn't pristine anymore. :/ I recall the same thing happened seven years ago when I got my copy of the original Time and Space. Wow, it's already been that long...

Anyways, so so far I'm enjoying CHRONOTORIOUS, Rockin' on Heaven's Door, Longing of the Wind, and the bonus track (is there a title?).

Forest Steppin' is like smooth sex in my ears. So good. I initially thought it was a Po arrangement. Hot stuff, Mustin. It's a shame I forgot to ask you to sign the booklet. I gotta find an excuse to visit Fayetteville.

Got the album yesterday. You guys do great work! Really, it is fantastic and I thank you for putting the time and effort into making this thing a reality. My favorite track is Tyrannosaurus. Nobody EVER remixes that song (or even really talks about it) and I was so glad to hear one of my favorite video game compositions reimagined.

Also, my album's case was also broken during shipping and in the same way that Nekobo's broke. It also happened to my copy of Volume I. Ah well, the disc is in good shape so that's all that matters. Good work everyone!

well, it's only 48 seconds of your life waiting for the secret track, or if you don't want to wait for it or if you make a copy (for whatever reason) you can edit out the 48 seconds of silence before the track. it's a pretty awesome idea.

oh yeah...

8 tracks doesn't sound so bad. I have a cd somewhere that has 73 tracks before reaching the bonus. Most were just 2 second silences, but some of then had a few seconds of random banter and sound effects. ... I don't know how I feel about that. Once I ripped it to computer I deleted them all anyway.

It was originally called "Dhsu totally tried to get zyko to do a rap remix but it didn't work out and then Mustin and two other jerkbags did one without even telling him even though he totally would've done a solo for it."

But it might have been too long or something, I dunno.

I am not a man who exaggerates. This is the best album I've purchased in a long, long year.

It's a superb combination of nostalgia and innovation. The track selection is great. More than any album from the scene or the studio, this album has a voice of its own - a consistent but non-repetitive signature sound that it establishes and flexes with every track. Even the piano piece feels at home on this disc -- each track is less about how great Chrono Trigger was and more about an attitude - an attitude that intends to take you home and make you its pretty lady of the week.

I fell in love with Castle Rock almost immediately and listened to about five times in a row before progressing. The surprising tracks are those from 65 million years ago - neither Ayla's Theme not Tyran Castle have had much of any presence in fan-related Chrono-tributes and it was a delight to be reminded of these great tracks. Schala's Theme, long derided as the most covered track in the scene, plays out like the encore performance to wrap up a five hour stadium concert, like a last final hurrah for one of Mitsuda's finest pieces. Lavos - the first instance of anything in a video game that scared the shit out of me - arrives as it always does, at the end of things, in a blaze of alien horror and chaos. Listening to Kunal's medley of his themes is almost frenzying - it charges me in a way that makes me want to rip a car in half. It was a treat to hear the full version of B.A.M.F. - it felt like learning the answer to a riddle near the end of a story. I feel guilty for not specifically calling out every track on the album here: They're all spectacular. These are just a some of my favorites.

The production value of the packaging deserves special mention. The album cover, liner notes, and impressive quantity of high-caliber artwork inside is really incredible. It demonstrates the pride that these people - and one person in particular - have in their product.

CHRONOTORIOUS is the best thing to come out of OneUp Studios and I hope and pray that it's a sign of things to come. I congratulate everyone who worked on it for an A+++ Would Do Business Again piece of work and I urge everyone who's still on the fence to buy it. The craftsmanship is worth your money alone, but you're also buying a signature piece of art.

I've used a lot of big words and prattled on for a bit but I have one more thing I'd like to say to anyone who cares to read it: Strive for this level of quality in everything that you do. The fruits of your labor will make themselves apparent.

Guys this album is REALLY, REALLY good. Every single track now lives in my favorite instrumentals playlist, and that's not a playlist that gets a lot of VGM arrangements.

Forest Steppin' is my favorite, as Secret of Forest is my favorite piece of VGM (I read the liner notes; Mustin, I didn't know we shared the same fave) and it's just--wow. Just a REALLY great arrangement of the piece. It's new & fresh & unique but very true to the feel of the original.

I also really like B.A.M.F. & The Bad Ending, and Dethfrog also makes MY small son dissolve into hysterical laughter! Only he's just discovered his Evil Overlord laugh so it's half-cute, half-bizarrely menacing. But that's off topic. Oh, and Cave Girl! This is the first arrangement of that song I've ever liked!

I sit here listening to it and I just keep coming up with awesome things to say about it, & nothing I dislike.

Got it in the mail today. Mailmen obviously don't know how to not break things. I could package and send on a ton of steel and it would managed to be cracked. >_> I'll just fix it up with one of my old CD's.

With that said. I'm loving the album. It's unique. It's Genre is broad as hell. Not a bad thing, through, as it stays true to the originals enough not to be repetitive while arranging them in a variety of styles. A bit refreshing after these disappointments of remix albums as of late. (FFIV, Capcom's Rockman 9 Arrange, Summoning of the Spirits). Seems like all the Nintendo Metal VG albums were getting too much love. Particulars tracks in mind that stick out

Castle Rock: I was expecting a lead up into something big, and I kept wondering when it would happen until I realized that was it. Became alot more enjoyable after that.

Rockin' On Heaven's Door: Loved the Distortion, Loved the Buildup, just all around enjoyable. The breakdown was very nice if I may say so myself.

Dream of Black: Joshua Morse has talent. It's amazing how this almost seems as a super enhancement on this song. It was already a good track, and then it just got to great status. It didn't do anything really dynamic, or try to be another genre that its not. Great track.

Bottomed Out: Smooth. It's very, very smooth. Relaxing, melodic, and just the right amount of base without breaking down the structure into something else. Good stuff.

The bonus tracks were great also, but reviewing them would be a waste of words because the question is not "are they" or "how good." The question is "When is my paycheck coming in so I can order this"

Keep up the good work guys, and thanks for this album.

Well, I'm very late in posting this, as I've had it nearly a month now, but here's my track-by-track review, after several listens and time to digest each tune.

1. Chronotorious — This starts things out right. Nice and funky, yet laid back. Really sets the feel for the album, and does some things I don't think we've really heard before with an often-mixed tune.
2. Castle Rock — The first of several songs on this album that have been largely untouched in the VG mixing scene certainly doesn't disappoint. It's piano-heavy with a lot of good accompaniment sampling. Really follows the original melody quite well while taking the overall sound in a completely different direction. I really like this one.
3. Rockin' on Heaven's Door — This is probably my favorite track on the whole album. Of course, I've always liked Corridors of Time, and I have no shortage of mixes of the theme to choose from. This might be my favorite version. Starts out pretty standard for a mix of this theme, then starts to gradually build more and more until it just turns into an all-out rock ballad. Really awesome. I especially love the quote of the Chrono Trigger theme at the three-minute mark. That part of that theme seems to fit so well into so many mixes.
4. Dethfrog — This one's really interesting and really fun. Of course, any longtime Ailsean listener will recall Knights Come Marching Home at certain parts, as this feels like an evolution from that excellent track, but all the growling vocals and a few other things set it apart. Nice and energetic track.
5. Cave Girl — Ah, another track that has been pretty much ignored up until now. And zyko does some great stuff with it. There's some awesome guitar work throughout (among other things), and the greater feel of the track really harkens back to the character of everyone's favorite, well, Cave Girl.
6. B.A.M.F. — Yet another awesome track (not like there are any bad ones on the album). Starts out nice and subdued, a very melodic treatment of Battle with Magus...then everything gets all funked up. And it's awesome. The contrasting styles really work well together while simultaneously competing for prominence in the mix. Lots and lots of interesting stuff going on.
7. disodium guanylate — Here's another usually ignored tune. po's mix here is definitely a little offbeat but stays true to the feel of both the album and the source material. Enjoyable from start to finish. Bonus: The story behind the track name is hilarious.
8. Watertite — Ocean Palace has always been one of my favorite tunes from the soundtrack, and it's also my favorite part of the game. The intensity of the plot, that sense of foreboding doom, all of which is reflected in the original track; I just love it. So it's no surprise that this is one of my favorite tracks on the album. Kunal's arrangement here, like many tracks in this collection, inserts a lot of funk into the tune. It also captures the intensity of the original pretty well. I really like the piano work here and there throughout the track.
9. Dream of Black — This is one of those tracks that just captures the source material almost perfectly. The Black Omen is a great final dungeon (even though it isn't truly that, at least not in the classic sense), and had a musical track that just begged to be on this album. I'm glad this made it on. I don't think Mr. Morse does a whole lot outside the source material (sure, there's some stuff, but it's mostly fitting embellishment), but that's in no way a complaint. It feels like an updated version of the original Black Omen theme, which I loved. Some more nice quoting of the Chrono Trigger theme in this track. I really enjoy it.
10. Bottomed Out — I've never been a really big fan of the original version of this, or really most other versions. Not that it's bad, just that I think it's generally overshadowed by some far better Mitsuda (and Uematsu) compositions on the soundtrack. Anyway, that lack of attachment doesn't take away from my enjoyment of this version. Mustin made a really nice laid-back mix here, and it fits so well with the album and improves on the original in so many ways that I enjoy it despite myself. May not be one of my favorites on the album, but it's still great.
11. Longing of the Wind — Ah, the ubiquitous piano mix of Wind Scene. There are many other piano versions of this theme, but most of them are slow, soft and largely subdued. Bladiator turns in some great work in his signature style. This is a very dynamic, energetic, and in parts almost jazzy (oops, should I say "spiffy"?) piece, so it really stands out among those other piano mixes. I have very fond memories of just wandering around the 600 A.D. map, sometimes pausing just to listen to the music, so this is another favorite track with lots of nostalgia for me.
12. Forced Enlightenment — Wow, this isn't something I expected to hear in a Schala mix. Very different. Very good. I'm not sure that, for me at least, anything can quite compare to The OneUps' version of this theme, but that's all right, as Diggi Dis doesn't try to emulate or compete with that treatment but rather do his own thing. And it's really enjoyable. Really stands out among a glut of other Schala mixes for doing some truly unique things musically. Probably a perfect textbook example of taking a theme and doing something original with it.
13. Tyrannosaurus — Uematsu didn't contribute too many tracks to Chrono Trigger, but several of the ones he did are absolute classics. This is one of my favorites of those (along with the sewer/Mt. Denadoro music). In typical Mazedude fashion, this track has some honestly rather bizarre musical choices that, despite being unusual for a mix, work really well. That is, Mazedude tracks always have this uniqueness and energy that few others can match, and it's always a pleasure to hear. This track in particular takes a solid original piece that was largely a hard-rock track (as much as the SNES could do that, anyway) and changed it around to follow a prehistoric theme, fitting in with its place in the story. Really fun track.
14. Forest Steppin' — This track is probably the quintessential laid-back tune from Chrono Trigger. I just love the piano work in this version, along with the soft and subdued accompaniment line. Really relaxing piece, and a great version of a great tune.
15. The Bad Ending — It may be The Bad Ending, but it's a great ending to the CD. There are several themes associated with Lavos, and Kunal weaves them together in what almost feels like a musical narrative of a catastrophe. The sound effects throughout (particularly the car alarm in the very beginning) add a lot to the atmosphere of the piece and really play to that disaster feel really well. Stuff like that makes me feel like I'm at the Day of Lavos, rocking out like it's 1999 when I listen to this track.

Prayer (Bonus Track) — This really feels like an encore to the CD. That funky, laid-back feel that you get across most of the tracks to varying degrees comes out in full force here, with some nice treatment of several themes from the soundtrack. Gotta love those solos.

Packaging: Is this really a fan-produced CD? Seriously? All of the OUS albums have had great packaging and such, but the artwork really sets this one over the top. The poster is incredible, the pic of Gato surrounded by the women from the game is a nice nod to OUS history, the CD itself looks cooler than most of the mass-produced, overcommercialized crap out there, and the rest of the artwork is great, too.

Overall package: This is a really great album. Everyone should get a copy while supplies last. I have no clue which tracks will make it to iTunes and Amazon mp3, but one thing is certain: In any case, several great tunes will NOT make it. This is the only way to make sure you get everything.

Easily the best of an awesome album. I heard it months before release as I was on the feedback group. I fell in love with it then (i.e. it was on a shitload of my playlists), and I still love it now. I don't see how that could NOT make the digital release.

I've listened to this so much these past few days. The project directors at OCR should be ashamed of themselves in comparison. While OCR's projects have drifted more towards these sprawling, disparate collections spanning multiple CDs, here is proof that honoring a soundtrack is probably best done in a terse and succinct manner. To really capture the essence of what makes this soundtrack so wonderful. I actually liked Chrono Symphonic quite a bit, and while the other projects have some great music on them, almost all of them lack any semblance of cohesion.

The cohesion I sense here is that everyone is really on the same page when it comes to making something "CHRONOTORIOUS." Make the most badass arrangements from a legendary soundtrack possible, and everyone delivers. Everyone on this dream team roster could easily do something down-tempo, but with the Bad Dudes we've come to expect our asses to be kicked.

Diggi Dis - I am actually very glad you got to re-do your track, because it is IMO the most exemplary of this badassery. I let it blast on my surround sound, and for lack of a better term, it is PHAT. The synths on B.A.M.F. are PHAT. po's slap-bass is PHAT. When the female vox "AHHH" sound comes in on the Morse's mix, that is absolutely PHAT. Morse is like on a whole different level here on his track, it's ridiculous and I wish I were well versed enough in music to describe how sonically brilliant it is.

Ailsean re-doing his Frog mix in death metal fashion? Longtime fans of his are gushing. Danimal providing a fresh take on Corridors of Time? Even better than Zealous Entropy. Bladiator doing his obligatory duty as a solo pianist and tackling Yearnings of the Wind? kLuTz and Christian Pacuad should be applauding the result. I think everyone picked the perfect track for themselves here, and the ordering of the tracks is perfect.

Only disappointment in this CD - Team Gato 2 is not a secret track.

Time to Rant and Rave some more after having this for a while now. I'll try to keep this brief.

I'll start off out of order and just say that Watertite is smooth. Very Smooth. Baseline is catchy, and overall. Kunal is a good artist, seems like I like his work more every new release. I can't really say anything extremely constructive about it, its a great song.

Mustin's Tracks "Bottomed Out" and "Forest Steppin'" are really funky. Not so much as Chillout music like Kunal, but its got that nice Funky enjoyable listen to, like when your walking to the store, or cleaning around. That kinda Funky Chillout stuff. Its well rounded.

The 3 Unique Tracks (IE:The ones that stand out for how different they are) are really enjoyable. Well I usually reserve my opinion for Mazedude music because its crazy stuff that has a certain appeal to it. (everything Pre-Thai-guy scares the shit out of me). But I have to admit, I appreciate his outlandish efforts just for the composition planning that goes behind it. The other 2, "Forced Enlightenment" and "Cave Girl" are some lovely tracks. I love the uniqueness of Diggi Dis as it has a certain Classical music with a touch of Hip Hop feel to it. Its a bit slow in some parts, but a great listen.
In "Cave Girl" the intro is slow, but Once it gets started, it gets great. I appreciate the legnth, but I wonder how the song would have turned out a bit more compressed, with the guitars and beats coming in alot faster, but I like and appreciate the track for what it is. Plus Zyko is a beast on the guitar. ("Unnatural Selection" and "A Dark World" ftw)

Next, the two Jazz Favorites Joshua and po! Make some great tracks. but damn, everyone else sure did give them a run for their money this album. I laughed when I saw the reasoning for po!'s song name, but his track is funky, and it has that po feel. Then again, Blindfold anyone, and they can tell you its po!'s work because he's that distinct. Its got its ups and downs through.
"Dreams of Black" is great. I love it. Yet at the same time, I feel like its long for the sake of being long. Its a great track, but You could have cut it at the 2:35 Mark and it still would have been gold. Yet I'd be lying if I said I didn't like every second of the song after it. The buildup at 4:21 is delicious. Great Track.

Deathfrog is fun to listen to. I can imagine how it wouldn't appeal to everyone, but I'm a Techno+Metal Head so I love it. I describe it as Nerd-Metal. And as a Nerd Metal Song its great, but its surrounded by Jazzy Arrangements so it really can't get the love it deserves. Its a Great song on the wrong album. (Hint hint: Guitar Album.)

Castlerock is amazing. Its got a unique tune with unique instruments, arranged to fit snuggly within this album. I mean, I don't want to sound like I'm praising the thing, but I really applaud JJT as this song really seems like a song that could easily be disregarded if made anywhere else. With its soft instruments it really seems like something that would go on the Xenogears album had it been not all pianos.

While on the subject of Pianos, we have Bladiator. Beautiful Piano work like always. I'll admit, Longing of the wind had a slow start for me, but its really calming, and sounds great. Especially that impressive work that kicks in around 1:23. Hell, It think it would put a tear in Yasunori's eye to hear that. Not to mention the fade out at the end is lovely.

What hasn't been said about "Rockin' On Heaven's Door". Danimal Cannon shows off that impressive guitar work. I mean this song has been remixed 1000+ times (and that's an understatement!) and this song makes itself unique out of all of them that I've heard so far. I don't know how, who, when, what, or where, but this song is great for its approach in this song.

B.A.M.F is what I call a Schizo song. I love the piano at the begging, and I love the fade out into the beats. Yet the song switches Genres. Too much. I like listening to it, but the song finds itself everywhere. Its enjoyable, but Too much switching. Its a great listen through.

"The Bad Ending" I'll just flat out say is the bad apple of the bunch. Stylistically, I can appreciate it, but the source tunes are hard to find. The beginning is slow, and easily a turn off, and while I appreciate the Jazzy and Rock approaches in the song, it felt like they didn't belong together and should have been made into separate songs themselves. Then the ending tries to mesh them together, and its just so meh. It could have been so much more. I still think Kunal is a great artist through, yet this could have been thought out some more.

Chronotorious, is a great song. Yet it feels like The Oneups Version with some techno. Its not bad, I actually like this one a bit more than The Oneups one. If anything I would say it was a bit too soft and bashful with the beats, but its a great listen. Everytime it seems like theirs a secret recipe of "Tim Sheehy+Drums=Awesome."

Finally that secret Bonus Track. Well I'm not going to review it. Its way too awesome. If you got the CD there's a 99.99 percent that you love it. If you didn't get the CD, then you should have tubeed the cash out of someone or something for this CHRONOTORIOUS Album. *coughcough*

Anyways, Amazing work.

I mean, I don't want to sound like I'm praising the thing
Why not?

After listening to the CD many times, my top three favorite tracks would be

1. Longing Of The Wind
2. Rocking On Heaven's Door
3. Chronotorious

Longing of the wind sounds like something out of the Sims, but it really spoke to me.

I heard the Sagat quote in Bottomed Out for the first time just now. How have I missed that before? Is that riff the new Cumshot?

I heard the Sagat quote in Bottomed Out for the first time just now. How have I missed that before?

For me it was harder to recognise because it sounds more like the lesser-used second part of the riff that plays, and the notes are pretty different.

Is that riff the new Cumshot?

It sure seems like it, especially with its inclusion in Posu Yan's two most recent tracks on OCRemix and the upcoming Heroes vs. Villains project. I hope it doesn't replace Cumshot entirely! I miss hearing it everywhere.

Speaking of which, Mustin's earlier comment "anywhere else on the album it sounds Sagat-ish?" makes me wonder if there's another occurrence that I've missed.

EDIT: I think I found it, actually. What do people think of 3:42 in Forest Steppin'?

wow, amazing cd, i loved it, the first song i heard was schala, i was like theres people that make game music, finally, well enough of that, i like this version, my all time fav is the oneups. i didnt really like aylas theme in the game i like her character i think she is cool but her song kinda sucks, but when you guys did it i change my mind, the guitars every thing was so beautiful about that song,of course chrono trigger song always a beautiful song, when im playing and i hear it i get exited to see whats going to happen all thought i have played it and started so many times just cuz i dont want to finish it. the castle theme is awesome, a ver que mas me gusto, i didnt like three songs, of course the bad ending, the zeal song , tyranosaurus song and frogs theme, i cant stand that character he grosses me out, i love what you guys did with corridors of time, one of my favorite songs, and of course the hidden track, i never get tired of hearing the cd, even the songs i dont like i still hear them, you guys did a great, amazing job, of course you are not going to please every one, and theres going to be songs that not all of us may like but even so every song is beautiful ..
